Position Summary

As an Electrical Engineer, you will oversee the full lifecycle of complex electrical systems for industrial sterilization machines, from initial concept to design obsolescence. You will e responsible for varied complexity electronic designs using computer-aided design software to create detailed specifications,  schematics, PCB layouts, mechanical designs, and BOMs, while managing the assembly and integration of major components, interfaces, and enclosures. 
 
Beyond design, you will work as part of a design team to build, analyze and troubleshoot subsystems to ensure compliance with performance specifications. This position requires a collaborative mindset to work with internal and external stakeholders, and a commitment to safety protocols.
 
Please note that this opportunity is a full-time, permanent position and is fully on-site at our Stittsville, ON, office.

What You'll do as an Electrical Engineer at STERIS

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the engineering team to share and receive information and make helpful contributions to projects that enable the successful completion of system builds. Contribute to updates and improvements to allow the systems to meet all requirements.  Participate in and initiates the design review process.
  • Contribute to and lead small team efforts by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; support the directives and decisions of more senior technical staff and management, review work of less senior technical staff and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in the entire PCB design process from concept to implementation to ensure the engineering of the whole system is optimal, which includes designing, analyzing, determining part specifications, assembling, and testing.
  • Write and use detailed design specifications and product/system-level requirements to design/model, implement, test, and evaluate custom electrical systems and sub-assemblies for radiation sterilization machines and systems. Ensure designs conform to standards, specifications, requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Help to identify technical problems, troubleshoots, tests, and evaluates existing and new electrical designs and provides creative solutions.
  • Generate detailed, high quality technical documentation to capture and communicate designs. Document work by preparing engineering reports and studies.
  • Calculate, and check technical drawings for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and work with suppliers and manufacturers to obtain and design parts to contribute to project completion. Source components as needed for assemblies and manage delivery timelines to meet project schedules.
  • Apply technical tools and concepts under the direction of others to refine and evaluate the overall process and electrical design from schematic design to the mechanical layout. Conduct quality control checks and qualification to ensure that all components are acceptable and function properly before releasing to production or installing at a customer site. 
  • Attend meetings and communicate with Customers using excellent Customer service to maintain relationships and represent STERIS positively. Travels to Customer sites independently or with more senior technical staff to gather the requirements needed to fulfill Customer needs and expectations.
  • May lead small sub-project teams and mentor new hires in process, technical, and problem-solving best practices. May travel to Customer sites to participate in machine installation. All other duties as assigned.

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed

Required:

  • Holder of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 1 year of related industrial experience. 
  • Knowledge with Electrical engineering concepts, principles and systems (e.g., analog, digital, RF, modules, components).
  • Knowledge of electronics assembly and diagnostic tools, such as soldering systems, oscilloscopes, function generators, and VNAs. 

 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience designing and evaluating electrical systems for single PCBs and/or low complexity systems.
  • Skill to utilize a variety of computational tools and platforms, and a variety of 2D and 3D tools to document, calculate, model, and design circuits and assemblies.  
  • Experience with schematic capture tools, preferably OrCAD or KiCad. 
  • Experience with Circuit simulation tools such as Pspice, LTspice, or Falstad.
  • Experience with 3D modelling tools, preferably Autodesk Inventor.  
  • Experience with ERP systems, BOM structures, and Change Control methodologies.  
  • Experience with team collaboration software such as Jira and Confluence.  
  • Experience designing systems to standards, specifications, requirements and safety protocols.

Pay range for this opportunity is $73,100.00 - $94,600.00. This position is eligible for bonus participation, with an annual bonus opportunity of 6% of your fiscal year compensation, subject to the Bonus Plan’s terms and conditions.
