Position Summary

Processes Customer product utilizing one or more processing modalities, (gamma, EtO, or E-Beam). Duties include safe operation of processing equipment in accordance with operating regulations and procedures; assuring proper care of Customer product. Places and retrieves sterile, test or biological sampling devices to monitor appropriate processing levels. Reviews product and process documents and instructions, i.e. Customer provided special instructions or work instructions, and ensures accurate processing. Performs intermittent Team Leader duties including supervising the plant floor and employee training during assigned shift, and assuming lead position for day-to-day activities as needed.


  • Protects Customer product by ensuring proper processing and handling according to operating procedures; monitors process cycles and control systems to ensure operation within Customer, quality, regulatory and internal company specifications; reviews and completes all appropriate processing documentation.
  • Operates processing vessels, irradiators and/or electron beam equipment.
  • Ensures Customer product is processed according to specified procedure by maintaining machines and equipment for proper operation and minimized downtime and deviations; perform minor repairs when needed until maintenance is required for more complex repairs.
  • Makes scheduling adjustments as required
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by monitoring environmental control systems and inspecting equipment for unsafe conditions and reporting to supervision as required; generates maintenance work orders for repairs; responds to process and equipment alarm conditions and acting within operational and safety guidelines; conducts area housekeeping on a daily basis. May participate in scheduled or unscheduled safety rounds.
  • Assists the management in ensuring the proper processing of Customer products, serving as back-up and performing lead duties as needed. Provides guidance and direction, and assists in training activities.
  • Maintains flow of product by loading/unloading product into processing rooms and/or vessels; may load product onto pallets; stages processed product in shipping storage area.
  • Maintains mechanical and technical skills, knowledge and abilities by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications and participating in training operators and material handlers to conduct minor, basic repairs to equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Exhibits a commitment to the AST shared values of Customer Satisfaction and Continuous Improvement through ensuring defect-free workmanship, assisting others to meet the Customer’s needs, searching for efficient and effective ways to reduce waste, being active and accountable for Customer satisfaction, and satisfying the Customer’s needs with a sense of urgency.
  • Contributes in a team effort by performing according to the guidelines outlined in the STERIS Code of Business Conduct, the GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher level management and performs other duties as assigned.

Education Degree

  • High School Diploma or GED

Required Experience

  1. Must be classified as an Operator I or retain Operator certification for a minimum of twelve months prior to being classified as an Operator II.
  2. Must successfully pass company Operator training program and maintain certification.
  3. Must be certified to operate manual and motorized material handling equipment, including, but not limited to, forklifts, pallet jacks, elevators, conveyors, etc. and processing vessels or irradiators.
  4. Possess specific licenses as required by law, i.e., New Jersey Pesticide Applicator’s License and Boilers License.
  5. Previous Material Handler experience preferred, plus completion of certification. Minimum of one (1) year progressive equipment operator experience, utilizing one or more processing modalities; experience within the organization preferred.
  6. Subject to passing Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) required background check.
  7. Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate in English.
  8. Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
  9. Requires ability to navigate through defined computer screens.
  10. Above average organizing and analyzing skills and Level 2 math skills (four basic arithmetic functions in all units of measurement, decimals ratios, rates, percentages) to determine organizational, Customer and regulatory problems and formulate corrective action plans; attention to detail.
  11. Able to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
  12. Basic understanding of sterilization principles and need for extreme caution handling product.
  13. Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms, bells, horns, etc.
