Position Summary

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing microbiological processes and techniques to support the testing and analysis of Customer samples. They will be multiskilled in a variety of Laboratory test areas and operate a range of different equipment and machinery. The Laboratory technologist is responsible for abiding to defined quality procedures, ensuring all test records are accurately completed and for supporting efficient and on time service delivery to the STERIS Customer base. 




  • To ensure all laboratory work is carried out in compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 including section 13 "Duties of employees", Health and Safety policies and all relevant statutory provisions in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team. 

  • Continuously monitor work area and take immediate action to correct and report near misses, unsafe acts or conditions. 

  • Ensure personal protective clothing equipment is worn in accordance with the Health & Safety policy. 


  • To ensure all work in the laboratory is carried out in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice, ISO13485 (Current Revision), ISO17025 (Current Revision) accreditation requirements, internal procedures and in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team. 

  • To understand and always abide by the STERIS Quality Management System and the incorporated procedures. 

  • To ensure the Laboratory unit is maintained in a clean and orderly condition and complete general house keeping tasks as per relevant quality documentation. 

  • Maintain accurate and sufficiently detailed records of all quality tests performed, ensuring all documentation meets Good Document Practice (GDP) 

  • Maintain test equipment and instrumentation in good working order. 

  • To alert a member of the senior laboratory management team to any process, job related problems or discrepancies.

  • Record and monitor consumable stocks relating to the Laboratory to ensure adequate stocks of supplies are maintained at all times. 

  • Ensure that warehouse and laboratory space is utilised to maximum efficiency. 

  • To be proactive in highlighting and resolving situations to support turnaround time adherence and achieve right first time. 



  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the site management team. 

  • Undergo internal and external training as required. 

  • To provide support to ongoing continuous improvement efforts and LEAN activities with STERIS 

  • To deal with all organisational, Customer and internal parties information with strict confidentiality at all times and in a professional manner.

  • Perform standard microbiological procedures and techniques, including, but not limited to: use of aseptic technique, microbiological identifications, culture preparation, LAL Endotoxin testing, bioburden, environmental monitoring, biological indicator testing, product inoculations and sterility testing. 

  • Follow defined experimental procedures and processes. 

  • Operate laboratory equipment and machinery, including, but not limited to: autoclaves, balances, heating mantles, gas chromatographs, incubators, laminar air flows, cleanrooms, pH meters, filtration apparatus, temperature monitoring systems, pipettes, thermometers, kinetic and gel clot equipment, MALDI-ToF. 

  • To assist in the day to day organisation of the microbiology unit, to meet departmental and Customer needs. 

  • Play an active role in contributing towards the facility achieving monthly on time delivery targets and adhering to Customer lead times. 

  • Interacting with and using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to process samples. 

  • Document information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books. 

  • Complete projects by assisting project team and attending and participating in group and project meetings. 

  • Enhance laboratory and organisation reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value. 

  • May undertake training of other staff members. 

Education Degree

Associate's Degree
