Position Summary

The Associate Laboratory Technician assists and supplies the demands of the laboratory to support the daily

organisation of the microbiology and chemistry units thus facilitating the timely testing and analysis of all samples. The

Associate Technician is responsible for media preparation, the cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment, and

ensuring all lab consumables are rotated and adequately stocked.

Duties

1. To assist Laboratory Technicians in the day-to-day organisation of microbiology and chemistry testing to meet departmental and Customer needs.

2. Retrieval and distribution of samples requiring analysis to the relevant holding location or Laboratory Technician at the beginning of the day and at various intervals throughout the day as appropriate.

3. Ensure collection, cleaning and washing of glassware and other tools so that they are readily available to Laboratory Technicians.

4. Ensure required laboratory consumables are available for testing, to prevent any delays to the testing schedule.

5. Manage, record, and monitor consumable stocks relating to the Laboratory to ensure adequate stocks of supplies are maintained at all times, observing FIFO If applicable to ensure no time sensitive stock is wasted.

6. Responsible for media manufacture and operation of associated equipment – autoclave, balances, heating mantles, stirrers, incubators, PH meter, and other equipment used in carrying out duties, on sites that produce media on site. Maintaining test equipment and instrumentation in good order.

7. Maintaining accurate and sufficiently detailed records of all tasks performed, ensuring all documentation meets Good Document Practice (GDP) including protocols, reports, procedures, policies, test reports, logbooks and internal records.

8. To ensure the Laboratory unit is maintained in a clean and orderly condition, completing general housekeeping tasks in test rooms including the disposal of laboratory waste (cardboard, glass, waste containers).

9. Undertake clerical tasks including data entry, filing, and archiving.

10. After becoming competent in main functions training will be provided in basic microbiological and chemistry testing techniques.

1. To ensure all laboratory work is carried out in compliance with local Safety, Health and Welfare regulations and all relevant statutory provisions in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.

2. Ensure personal protective clothing equipment is worn in accordance with the Health & Safety policy and continuously monitor work area for unsafe acts or conditions taking immediate action to correct.

3. To ensure all work in the laboratory is carried out in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice, ISO13485 (Current Revision), ISO17025 (Current Revision) accreditation requirements, internal procedures and in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.

4. To deal with all STERIS, Customer, and internal parties’ information with strict confidentiality at all times and in a professional manner.

5. Play an active role in contributing towards the facility achieving monthly on time delivery targets and adhering to Customer lead times.

6. To alert a member of the senior laboratory management team to any process, job related problems or discrepancies. To be proactive in highlighting and resolving situations to support turnaround time adherence and testing requirements.

Education Degree

High School Diploma or GED
