Laboratory Assistant

Position Summary
To assist and supply the demands of the laboratory to support the daily organisation of the microbiology and chemistry units thus facilitating the timely testing and analysis of all samples. The laboratory assistant is responsible for media preparation, the cleaning and maintaining of tools and equipment, and ensuring all lab consumable are rotated and adequately stocked. Please note: This is a part-time role, 8 hour shift for Saturdays.
Duties
Safety
•To ensure all laboratory work is carried out in compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 including section 13 "Duties of employees", Health and Safety policies and all relevant statutory provisions in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.
•Cleaning of general laboratory, test rooms and cleanroom, including the disposal of laboratory waste generated in carrying out duties.
•Continuously monitor work area for unsafe conditions and take immediate action to correct unsafe conditions.
Quality
•To ensure all work in the laboratory is carried out in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice, ISO13485 (Current Revision), ISO17025 (Current Revision) accreditation requirements, internal procedures and in conjunction with the laboratory staff and under the direction of the laboratory senior management team.
•To understand and always abide by the STERIS Quality Management System and the incorporated procedures.
•To ensure the Laboratory unit is maintained in a clean and orderly condition and complete general house keeping tasks as per relevant quality documentation.
•Maintain accurate and sufficiently detailed records of all quality tests performed, ensuring all documentation meets Good Document Practice (GDP)
•Maintain test equipment and instrumentation in good order.
•Perform review of GLP documentation generated in the Laboratory. This documentation includes, but is not limited to, protocols, reports, procedures, policies, test reports, log books and internal records.
•To alert a member of the senior laboratory management team to any process, job related problems or discrepancies.

Delivery
•To assist Laboratory Technologists in the day-to-day organisation of work in the microbiology and chemistry unit, to meet departmental and Customer needs
•Ensure collection, cleaning and washing of glassware and other tools so that they are readily available to technologists.
•Responsible for media manufacture and operation of associated equipment – autoclave, balances, heating mantles, stirrers, incubators, and other equipment used in carrying out duties.
•Responsible for cleaning laboratory equipment as required e.g. refrigerators, incubators etc
•Retrieval and distribution of samples requiring analysis to the relevant holding location or technologist at the beginning of the day and at various intervals throughout the day as appropriate
•Ensure required laboratory consumables are available for testing, to prevent any delays to the testing schedule
•Cleaning and tidying of all laboratory areas.
•Removal of waste materials from the laboratory (cardboards, glass, waste containers) in addition to organizing the removal of hazardous material.
•Assist with stock rotation in conjunction with the other laboratory staff.
•As this person becomes competent in their main functions they will be trained in basic microbiological and chemistry testing techniques.
•Play an active role in contributing towards the facility achieving monthly on time delivery targets and adhering to Customer lead times.

•Record and monitor consumable stocks relating to the Laboratory to ensure adequate stocks of supplies are maintained at all times.
•To be proactive in highlighting and resolving situations to support turnaround time adherence and testing requirements.
Other
•Undertake any other duties as directed by the site management team.
•Undergo internal and external training as required.
•To provide support to ongoing continuous improvement efforts and LEAN activities with STERIS
•To deal with all organizational, customer and internal parties information with strict confidentiality at all times and in a professional manner.
