Position Summary

The Manager, Health Safety & Environment is responsible for providing HSE support, advice and solutions, ensuring compliance, and developing best practice on health and safety issues for the Liecester Operations and Bishop Stortford Operations as required. The position is also responsible for driving high standards of safety performance enabling the STERIS business to achieve its HSE objectives.

Working closely with the Director of HSE and the operational business to champion, communicate and ensure the delivery of the divisional HSE strategy with the objective of making and keeping the business safe against existing and emerging health and safety, fire safety, security and environmental risks. Building internal HSE competence and capability through the delivery of HSE support, training, audit and review.

Supporting the Director of Health Safety & Environment to implement, review and audit best practice HSE management systems across the facilities, contributing to the development of robust, innovative health, safety and environment (HSE) standards, policies, guidance and practice.

Duties

Health, Safety and Environmental Management (85%)

  1. Provide proactive, efficient and professional HSE advice, coaching and support to facilities and functional teams.
  2. Work with allocated sites, site management teams to communicate and drive compliance with HSE standards to ensure a safe working environment.
  3. Ensure that effective management of health, safety and environment is embedded at an operational level within the business, and that managers and employees at all levels are aware of their HSE responsibilities.
  4. Contribute to the development of and support the effective implementation of the divisional HSE strategy, participating in the regular review of the strategy and its implementation.
  5. Support the development, monitoring and maintenance of HSE Management Systems that are equivalent and aligned to the ISO 45001 and 14001 management standards the continuous improvement of the Safety Management System and
  6. Manage the effective implementation of HSE management systems, policies, standards, procedures and guidelines.
  7. Carry out internal and support third-party HSE audits and reviews, ensure that reports are issued in a timely manner and that all exceptions are appropriately escalated and addressed.
  8. Support allocated major project works and acquisition / integration activities, ensuring that consistent divisional HSE standards are adopted and implemented.

  1. Develop and maintain proactive relationships with relevant industry bodies, key suppliers and regulatory bodies.
  2. Maintain knowledge and awareness of regional HSE legislation, best practice and emerging risks, reporting changes that may impact the business and support the development of effective response strategies.
  3. Assist other HSE colleagues as required to build global HSE team effectiveness and capability

 

  1. Environmental Compliance Management (15%)
  2. Support environmental compliance, including conducting reviews, to ensure business units are fully compliant with relevant environmental requirements.
  3. Support the identification, communication and implementation of existing, new and/or revisions to existing environmental regulations.
  4. Support and coordinate environmental compliance tasks.

Education Degree

  • Vocational/Technical

Required Experience

  1. Vocational/Technical qualification and Chartered membership of IOSH or equivalent.
  2. 3-5 years experience with above qualifications or 8-10 years in lieu of the above qualifications.
  3. Ability to work both independently and as part of a regional / global team.
  4. Strong people management and leadership skills, including facilitation, training, and mentoring skills.
  5. Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with ability to manage site-level operational management relationships.
  6. Pragmatic approach with ability to effectively balance technical and commercial demands
  7. Strong project/problem resolution skills.
  8. Working knowledge of Safety and Health Management Systems (ISO 45001), Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001).
  9. Ability to develop and deliver effective training.
  10. Highly effective communication skills; written and oral.

Confident with the use of IT systems, e-learning platforms and software.  Understanding of applicable computer systems, such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, databases, and function specific software.
