Position Summary
The primary role of the repair technician is to perform repairs on medical instrumentation. Technicians will be trained to become familiar with various types of surgical instruments and understand how to best maintain and repair them. Repairs are completed either on a mobile laboratory, on-site in the hospital or at company repair center. All repairs completed to the highest quality standards and in a timely manner. In addition to repair work, Technicians may work with a team including Sales Representatives and CIRCs (Certified Instrument Repair Consultants) to identify and capitalize on revenue opportunities. Daily travel to various customer sites may be required as well as occasional over night travel. Travel requirements may vary by repair location. This position will require approximately 60% travel; 3 weeks in field working and 1 week in local area/lab.
What you will do as a Instrument Repair Technician
- Identifies surgical instruments by various type, use and functionality. Inspect instruments to determine what type of repair and/or adjustment is required.
- Disassembles malfunctioning medical instruments or equipment, troubleshoots and uses standardized testing procedures; examines and tests mechanisms for defects.
- Replaces or repairs defective parts; may require modification or manufacturing replacement components. Reassembles medical instruments or equipment and tests assembly for conformance to specifications.
- Inspects instruments and tests equipment periodically and adjusts calibration to ensure functioning within specified standards.
- Abides by all Company safety and health policies and procedures. Must use personal protective equipment if required.
- Determines correct spare parts required to complete repairs. If the parts required are controlled by inventory numbers, the technician is responsible for performing all necessary inventory transactions to ensure inventory accuracy.
- Perform repairs on surgical instruments . In certain situations, technicians may specialize in particular repair categories. Work will be performed on a mobile truck, in-house repair center, or in hospital lab.
- If assigned to a work vehicle, work with CIRC to manage and balance workload to minimize customer disruption. Help CIRC identify additional revenue opportunities.
- Exercise mechanical skills for precision, alignment, sharpening and repair of surgical instruments.
- Complete all necessary paperwork (i.e., logging instruments and completed repairs).
- Improve results for assigned area to increase revenue, profit, personnel development, and asset readiness
Required, Preferred, and Other Qualifications
- 2+ years of work experience, including at least 1 year of relevant experience, or 1 year of experience at STERIS; all experience must be verifiable. *Related certifications in technical or mechanical area, copmetitive equipment training or related military experince may be considered towards experince requirement.
- Relevant experience may include hands-on repair, assembly, or product testing and use of small hand tools is a plus.
- Small engine repair, cell phone and electronics repair, testing, or re-builds, carpentry, circuit board assembly and repair, sterile processing, industrial sewing, and jewelry repair.
- Maintenance, construction, and automotive repair can also be relevant to this role
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times and push instrument carts ranging from 10-150 pounds at times.
- Must be able to meet flexible schedules with early/late hours and sometimes outside normal business hours including nights and weekends, based on Customer and business needs
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred
- Experience with solder, brazing or other fine mechanical applications is preferred.
- Vocational / Technical Degree preferred.
- Certifications in technical training preferred.

- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using appropriate communication channel in a professional manner at all times with internal and external Customers.
- Troubleshooting commensurate with training status and experience
- Expected to be able to work well with others in a team environment and support positive Customer interactions when onsite
Required Experience
- Individuals with experience working as a Craftsman/woman in detailed repair work such as metal/jewelry shaping and polishing, watch making/repair often have transferable skills to this position
- Good hand/eye coordination (manual dexterity)
- Basic organizational and troubleshooting/problem solving skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Willingness to listen and learn
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Willing to work overtime and weekends, flexible shifts as required, and assist in other areas of repair centers as needed
- Ability to effectively communicate with Customers, peers and management
- Mechanical aptitude required
- Basic PC skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Understanding of and willingness to adhere to basic company expectations (Customer focus, teamwork, integrity, accountability and professionalism)
- Willing to travel extensively (i.e., field travel for three weeks at a time)

Pay rate for this opportunity is $21.50 per hour. This position is eligible for bonus participation.
Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
