Position Summary

The Electrical Engineering Intern will assist with several critical tasks, including identifying and mitigating component Obsolescence, Bill of Material entry, and component entry into Design Tools. 

 

Work will be centered on developing and updating symbols, footprints, and 3D models for diverse electrical components using computer aided design software. These components support schematics and designs of varying complexity. 

 

This position supports the work of more experienced technical staff in analyzing, determining part specifications, and capturing designs.  Working effectively with a team is crucial to success in this position.

  • Duration: 8-12 month commitment preferred
  • Location: Stittsville ON
  • Work Environment: Onsite
  • Hours: 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week for the duration of the internship, core hours are 09:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday. 

What You'll Do as an Electrical Engineering Intern

  • Communicate and collaborate with team members to make useful contributions to projects that enable the successful completion of system builds. Participate in the design review process.
  • Contribute to a team effort by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; support the directives and decisions of more senior technical staff and management and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in research, development, and prototyping activities to design electrical systems primarily for single PCBs using computer-aided design software.
  • Document work by preparing engineering reports, studies, validation reports, calculations, and checks technical drawings for completeness and accuracy.
  • Write and contribute to detailed design specifications, and ensures designs conform to standards, specifications, requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Apply technical tools and concepts under the direction of others to evaluate and/or create electrical designs including analyzing, determining part specifications, assembling, and testing of primarily single PCBs. Seek feedback from more senior technical staff on design approaches, analysis required, appropriate manufacturing techniques, and best practices to meet design requirements.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues and develop solutions to debug existing and new electrical systems.
  • Support the work of more senior engineers who are responsible for very complex and/or custombuilt electro-mechanical subassemblies/control systems.
  • May visit Customer sites to service and/or install machines and see machines in operation to better understand operators’ needs and issues; incorporate service team and operators’ feedback into development efforts to enhance and optimize machine operation.
  • All other duties as assigned. 

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed

Required:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. 
  • Basic knowledge of electrical engineering concepts, principles and systems (e.g., analog and digital circuits, RF, modules, components). 
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and the principles involved in production of schematics, drawings, and models. 
  • Knowledge of electronic assembly and diagnostic tools such as soldering equipment, DMMs, and oscilloscopes. 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience designing and evaluating electrical systems for single PCBs and/or low complexity systems. 
  • Experience designing systems to standards, specifications, requirements and safety protocols. 
  • Skill to utilize a variety of computational tools and platforms, and a variety of 2D and 3D tools to document, calculate, model, and design circuits and assemblies. 
  • Experience with schematic capture tools, preferably OrCAD or KiCad. 
  • Experience with Circuit simulation tools such as Pspice, LTspice, or Falstad. 
  • Experience with 3D modelling tools, preferably Autodesk Inventor. 
  • Experience with ERP systems, BOM structures, and Change Control methodologies. 
  • Experience with team collaboration software such as Jira and Confluence. 

 

Other:

  • Skill to think analytically and strategically within the context of electrical systems. 
  • Skill to troubleshoot and solve problems during the design process of electrical systems and testing. 
  • Skill to communicate information clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form. 
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with team members, other internal departments, suppliers, and manufacturers. 
  • Ability to conceptualize, innovate and continuously improve designs. 
  • Ability to follow directions from more senior team members and management.
