Summary:
The Controls Developer is responsible for developing innovative control systems dedicated to the sterilization industry designed to meet market, customer, and regulatory requirements. These advanced control systems are used to monitor and control radiation, sterilization, & conveyance systems as per customer requirements. The Controls Developer is also involved with onsite system commissioning, ongoing control systems maintenance, and development of internal software automation tools. Development tasks will include, but are not limited to, implementing controls systems design under the guidance of senior developers, unit testing programs, system testing, problem resolution, providing guidance to junior developers, and supporting site implementation. The controls Developer II ensures that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely as per regulatory requirements. The position also requires staying abreast with advances in control systems, automation, design tools, and development practices.
What you will do as a Controls Developer:
- Communicates and collaborates with supervisor, development team members, and internal QA engineers.
- Adheres to formal design and quality processes and procedures.
- Contributes to the development of test protocols, user guides, and design documentation.
- Initiates peer code reviews with design team.
- Contributes to a team effort by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management and performs other duties as assigned.
- Mentors Associate Controls Developers. Develops Control & safety systems and associated programs.
- Contributes to test protocols, user guides and design documentation.
- Performs Units testing of developed software to minimize defects prior to Factory Acceptance Testing.
- Participates in product validation process during commissioning of systems. (IQ/OQ)
- Generation of a hardware design (I/O Allocation, Control Hardware Bill of Materials, etc.) that meets project requirements with supervision. Creates and maintains detailed design specifications with supervision.
- Provides assistance in remote and/or on-site commissioning.
- Provides support to Customers using excellent Customer service and communication skills to represent STERIS positively.
- Leads small Customer projects.
- Supports Customer control system upgrades.
- Assists Customers during the resolution process.
- Develops and maintains Customer relations during remote and on-site activities.
- All other duties as assigned.

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed:
- 2+ years of experience with an Associate's degree or 6+ years of experience with a high school diploma / GED.
- Knowledge of hardware and software design and development processes.
- Knowledge of Unit testing, Factory Acceptance testing, product testing, and product validation processes.
- Knowledge of the Control Hardware Bill of Materials.
- Knowledge of programmable logic controllers.
- Ability to develop in Ladder Logic and Structured Text PLC programming languages with understanding of PLC code that can be configured using external config files.
- Ability to read and understand P&ID (piping & instrumentation diagrams), mechanical drawing, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Experience in identify and minimize/fix defects in the systems and programs.
- Ability to be of assistance remotely or on-site as needed.
- Ability to travel internationally on short notice.
