Position Summary

  • Demonstrates excellent understanding of STERIS scientific technologies, sterlization science, and related sciences. 
  • Designs, develops, and carries out test plans for assigned projects with minimal management input. 
  • Independently perform standard analyses on samples. Presents results to management. 
  • Participates in refining current techniques, troubleshooting problems, and documenting processes, procedures and results. 
  • Manages projects or sections of projects and may provide direction to assigned staff and/or the project. 
  • Drafts and develops design controls, risk management and design transfer documentation
  • Displays excellent laboratory skills and an advanced understanding of relevant scientific principles theories. 
  • Works with little to no supervision/self motivated


  • Travel up to 10% (including international)
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment.
  • Understanding of design controls is required.
  • Assure efficient laboratory operation through acquisition and inventory control of consumables lab supplies and chemicals.    
  • Obtains resources needed to complete project deliverables.
  • Maintains knowledge of FDA and EPA requirements for current projects.
  • Develops and validates methods for laboratory instruments
  • May serve as technical expert in support of plant operations
  • Perform mathematical analysis and interpretation of data. 
  • Formulates hypothesis and designs experiments to test hypothesis

  • Demonstrates good oral communication skills:
    • Gives presentations within and outside R&D
  • Proficient in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Performs troubleshooting, advanced maintenance and calibration on analytical instrumentation.
  • Maintains the Research Notebook recording detailed information on activities undertaken, existing conditions and observed results.
  •      Perform all work in a safe and environmentally conscious manner

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry

Required Experience

  • Requires 8 years of related laboratory experience. 
  • Possess basic laboratory skills related to job field. 
  • Skilled in the use of basic chemistry laboratory equipment. 
  • Familiar with the operation/theory of GC, LC, FTIR, and quantitative wet chemsitry techniques.
  • Ability to read and follow protocols/Work Instructions/ methods. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. 
  • Capable of solving complex chemistry problems through accurate interpretation of data and in-depth investigations. 
  • Practical knowledge/experience working under regulatory agency guidelines is desired. 
  • Conduct independent research on assigned projects/work. 
  • Possesses a moderate degree of technical experience in analytical chemistry.

  • Familiarity with the purpose and function of softening, DI, and RO water purification systems.
  • General knowledge of water chemistry.
  • Maintains a level of technical knowledge and understanding of analytical chemistry that is consistent with the current scientific literature.
  • Practical knowledge/ experience working in a regulated industry is desired. 
  • Experience performing independent research.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and understanding interactions between experimental varibales is required. 
  • Hands-on working knowledge of common analytical instrumentation used in evaluating water quality, such as, ICP, IC, TOC, etc.
  • Strong oral communication skills to assist Customers and Field Service personnel in troubleshooting situations and to clearly explain complex water analysis reports.
  • Strong written communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Advanced chemistry degree preferred.
  • Experience in an environmental laboratory setting.
  • General knowledge of boilers for the use in steam generation for steam sterilization.
  • Familiarity with Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation® (AAMI) water standards.


  • Strong observation, communication (technical written and verbal) and problem-solving skills. 
  • Exceptional team player with some leadership responsibilities.
