Position Summary

Position responsibilities are at an individual contributor entry level.  Responsibilities include conceptualize, design, develop, revise, coordinate and implement packaging structures for all products under the authority of STERIS St. Louis Operations.  Products packaged on-site include aseptically filled, hazardous, and nonhazardous materials. Identify and propose advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs.   Identify and implement, as approved, packaging development process improvements to increase functional area deliverables.  Investigate and resolve package problems and complaints.  Support the interface between packaging and package production equipment to ensure successful packaging implementation and production operations.  Position will function within a World Class Safety culture.

Essential Job Functions

1.Practice a World Class Safety philosophy on and off the job.  Achieve an injury free personal Safety record.

2.  Assist with the design, develop, and implementation of effective, creative, cost appropriate packaging’s that are consistent with the objectives of all associated STERIS functional groups, such as Marketing, Product Development, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Quality Systems, Engineering, and Purchasing.  Packagings must comply with hazardous materials transportation, FDA, EPA, cGMP, and ISO regulations and guidelines.

3. Assist with the Identification, support, and implementation of packaging solutions for new product introductions, cost reductions, component and process improvements, regulatory compliance, and problem and complaint resolution.    

4. Write and update test protocols, SOPs, and component specifications.

5. Assist with the implementation, coordination, evaluation, and testing of new and revised packaging components. Make package change recommendations and develop component specifications based on test results.  Maintain all test records in an orderly, readily retrievable format.

6. Maintain all test records in an orderly, readily retrievable format. Implement, coordinate, and/or supervise applicable UN design qualification testing, periodic re-testing, and, as applicable, production testing.

7. Daily individual and team contact with internal STERIS and external vendor personnel.  Typical contacts include site Directors, Managers, Project managers and individual contributors in many functional areas, such as Marketing, Product Development, Purchasing, Quality Systems, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Packaging Development, contract packagers, and packaging manufacturers

Education

A Bachelor of Science from an accredited institution in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, etc.), Packaging Science or equivalent education is desired. 

Experience

3+ years engineering/packaging experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical and/or medical device industry with a knowledge of aseptic packaging technology and materials is desired.  Creativity and excellent skills in written and verbal communication are important.
