Position Summary

The primary role of the Operations Manager is to plan, direct and oversee the operation of the sterile services unit. Responsible for meeting the operational goals of the department across four key operational areas: Safety Quality Delivery and Cost (SQDC). Responsible for personnel coaching and development to ensure both technical and career path progression, and all aspects of human resource management. Fosters a spirit of empowered teamwork and unity among department members to effectively identify and implement continuous improvement measures. Is involved directly in customer-facing forums to answer operational queries; contribute to service-improvement projects; and ensure effective delivery of sterile services to our customers. Supports the General Manager with Quality Audit; site planned preventative maintenance; operational data review for contractual performance monitoring; and generating reports for customer and internal review, ensuring always to meet and exceed customer expectations.

Duties

To be responsible for the day to day running of the production unit and the logistical operation involving collection and delivery of contaminated products to the site and the delivery of quality sterilised products to the customer. 

To monitor and control the use of capital/processing equipment within recognised performance, safety and efficiency measures, ensuring conformance to legal guidance/requirements for planned preventative maintenance, calibration and validation.

To assume prime site responsibility for all Health and Safety Policy issues, including acting Chair of the Site Health and Safety Committee.  Also responsible for ensuring that all activities comply with Health and Safety procedures and guidelines, and that staff are trained and signed by the Site trainer as competent to undertake the duties required of their role. 

To proactively lead staff to put forward suggestions for continuous improvement, innovation and corrective actions as appropriate, and ensuring the implementation of all feasible suggestions. Chair associated employee forums, and act as Team Leader for site CI Improvement Events.

To monitor and ensure that all product despatched conform to accepted Company Quality guidelines and procedures, engendering and promoting a quality centred Organisational culture.

Ensures conformance to ISO goals and objectives and support ISO requirements.

Supports and actively participates in the company’s lean philosophy of continuous improvement.

To effectively control and manage the planned preventative maintenance of the premises, including site plant and processing equipment, resolving occurring faults, and effectively liaising with all personnel as required. 

To effectively plan and schedule all production to the agreed specification to meet customer requirements. 

To approve test reports on all critical processing equipment as an authorised User as defined in NHS guidance. 

To actively monitor and manage site personnel in accordance with company policy.  This includes absence management, ensuring adequate levels of staffing are maintained, and analysing data as appropriate; referring employees to the Company Medical Advisor as required. Where necessary, managing absence, conduct and capability (performance) through disciplinary procedures. Also responsible for technical staff recruitment; and ensuring effective lines of communication with Team Leaders and site management.

To work closely with the regional and site trainers to coach, support and guide all staff in accordance with the principles of Continuous Performance Management, as detailed in the company’s policies and procedures, ensuring the successful operation of the system throughout the site, and to act as an induction mentor as required. 

To agree appropriate financial parameters and budgets ensuring rigorous monitoring and complete adherence to financial targets. To work alongside the General Manager and Regional Accountant to ensure financial targets are tracked and achieved. This includes contractual penalties associated with site KPIs, and internal cost control. Also ensuring that projected/forecast CAPEX Projects and upgrade works are appropriately budgeted and planned.

To participate in the on-call management service to maintain emergency services to the customer. 

To lead and actively promote participation in all Company communications initiatives including Team Briefing, employee forums, and staff meetings as required

Education Degree

    Required Experience

    • Substantial previous experience of working in a sterile services environment including demonstrable experience of working at management level.

      •    Experience of managing people and dealing with staffing issues.

      •    Awareness of quality systems and auditing procedures.

    Skills

    Advantageous but not essential:

    Member of the Institute of Decontamination Sciences (IDSc).

    Substantial previous experience of working in a sterile services or production environment including demonstrable experience of working at management level. (min 3 years)

    Experience of managing people and handling HR-related conflict; performance management and absence management (min 3 years).

    Experience of quality systems and auditing processes and procedures (min 3 years)

    End-user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT system (min 3 years)
