Responsible for the Management of the Laboratory at STERIS Seriate

Ensures full adherence to all Quality and HSE requirements

Provision of Laboratory testing services to customers and managing communication with customers – including queries, complaints and other issues associated with the laboratory.

Liason with Regional Lab Manager DE & IT, Director of Global Labs, Italy Commerical team, Regional Director, Italian plant managers and other facility personnel in meeting test requirements of Italian and European client base and working to ensure a coherent and aligned service.

Management of laboratory facility and personnel.

Responsible for controlling laboratory costs and forecasting of monthly revenue.

Supporting the Regional Lab Manager DE & IT to ensure integrity of the laboratory testing and compliance with the relevant regulatory standards. Awareness of standard reviews and updates as appropriate.

Liason with AST Business Manager and Sales Manager in the development of laboratory business and provision of services to internal customers. Responsibility in the pricing and scope of services provided in conjunction with the Commercial team.

Supporting new test development and associated cost analysis

Control of Laboratory test lead times

Measurement and reporting of laboratory KPIs

Overall responsibility for all aspects of Laboratory Housekeeping.

Responsible that all processes and equipment are validated, calibrated and preventative maintenance programs maintained.

Responsible for supplier selection and approval.


Position Summary

The Laboratory Manager manages laboratory operations and personnel for multiple revenue streams and provides consultation services to existing and potential Customers on all areas of Laboratory testing with a key strategic role in maintaining and sustaining business growth. Provides technical knowledge and leadership with Customers, Sales and other functions.  Presents informational seminars and training to internal and external audiences and represents the Laboratory in Customer and Regulatory audits and tours. Responsible for ensuring Customer satisfaction and compliance with regulatory agency, 21CFR 820, Iso 13485, and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

  1.  Manages Laboratory processes for multiple revenue streams for Laboratory testing for internal STERIS Customers and external Customers to ensure quality and efficient sample processing in an environment of sustained business growth. 20% - 30%
  2. Leads Laboratory staff, including Supervisors, by coaching, counseling, mentoring, motivating, planning, monitoring and appraising job results; directing and maintaining activities designed to achieve and maintain high employee morale; fostering intra- and inter-department cooperation. 20% - 25%
  3. Provides critical technical expertise and manages communications with internal, current and potential external Customers, leading tours for current and prospective Customers. Represents the Lab in Customer and Regulatory audits. 20% - 25%
  4. Ensures best practices in leading edge technical knowledge to ensure that the Laboratory has required resources of equipment, Laboratory supplies, equipment, and staffing to ensure the ability to meet Customer deadlines. 10% - 15%
  5. Continuously evaluates new test methodologies and improvements to existing procedures to optimize and maximize Customer satisfaction. 5%
  6. Meets with internal STERIS Customers and external Customers to provide consulting services on laboratory testing. 10% - 20%

Required Experience

Work Experience

  • Minimum 10 years in a Laboratory or medical device industry.
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership role. 

Skills/Business Competencies

  • Knowledge and understanding of 21CFR 820, ISO 13485, ISO/EIC 17025 standards.
  • Must understand standard aseptic techniques and common laboratory equipment use.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures.
  • Experience in delivering excellent Customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations and personnel.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence.
  • High level of organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated high level decision-making capabilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience





Responsible for the Management of the Laboratory at Seriate, focused on ensuring excellent service for Customers, managing and developing the employees and delivering results in line with business expectations.

Bachelor’s Degree of Arts or Science degree in microbiology or related science, or the equivalent in education and experience. Preference is given for ASQ certification

Experience of managing a testing laboratory in the service sector within the healthcare sector preferable but strong operational experience and clear ability to handle Customers and learn could also be accepted.
