Position Summary

The Senior Formulation Scientist is a formulation chemist responsible for supporting new product development through innovative research and through developing technical expertise in STERIS's Infection Prevention Technology product segments.  The Senior Scientist will work directly with the NPD team, engineering and cross-functional teams to enhance the sophistication and compliance of new, unique infection prevention solutions to meet the customer’s varying unmet needs.


•    Responsible for the formulation, evaluation and implementation of new products based on differentiated technologies. 
•    Provides leadership and direction to project teams. 
•    Maintains knowledge in formulation while mentoring/coaching younger scientists.
•    Responsible for intellectual property protection by writing patent disclosures. 
•    Designs, develops, and carries out test plans for assigned projects with minimal management input. Independently perform standard analyses on samples.  Presents results to management.
•    Performs analyses and resolves issues using critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques.
•    Participates in refining current techniques, troubleshooting problems and documenting processes, procedures and results.
•    Performs initial evaluations on new technologies or methods for incorporation into STERIS products or laboratory methods.
•    Manages projects or sections of projects and will provide direction to assigned staff and the project.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related scientific field required.
  • Requires 8+ years of formulation experience in a new product development environment, taking products to market. 
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment.
  • Experience in product development project leadership is required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach and train other scientists.
  • Understanding of design controls is desired.
  • Travel up to 10% (including international)
  • Possess basic laboratory skills related to job field
  • Skilled in the use of basic chemistry laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow protocols/work instructions/methods.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Practical knowledge/experience working under regulatory agency guidelines is desired. 
  • Experience performing independent research.
  • Capable of solving complex technical problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and understanding interactions between experimental variables is required.
