The Role

 

The Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist in the STERIS St. Louis, MO facility is responsible for assisting the Senior HSE Manager with developing and providing support for the implementation of Health, Safety and Environment management systems for the St. Louis Manufacturing and Distribution Center operations.   

 

This position will assist the Senior HSE Manager with HSE programs focused on sustainability for health, safety and the environment for our Customers, employees and the surrounding communities.  The individual will be an integral team member of the Manufacturing Operations group, to implement “best practices” for STERIS employees. The path forward consistently requires the attainment and sustainment of the STERIS World Class Safety Excellence for all employees.

What You Will Do

 

  • Identify gaps and potential improvements in HSE management systems, developing and implementing actions to eliminate gaps.
  • Facilitate the facility forklift training program and associate certifications.
  • Captain the safety observation program to facilitate associate engagement and participation.
  • Work with senior HSE manager to create, review and update JHA’s as business need requires.
  • Coordinate the purchase of PPE and safety related equipment/supplies.
  • Conduct daily safety Gemba walks and complete/assign corrective measures are required.
  • Coordinate compliance with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements including reporting metrics and data to STERIS Corp and the respective governing bodies such as OSHA, Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and others.
  • Partner with operations to support incident investigation, root cause identification and creation and implementation of corrective measures.

  • Conduct equipment safety inspections to include fire extinguisher, eyewash, emergency light, AED and any other identified safety compliance inspections.
  • Support Lean processes in manufacturing operational environment.
  • Facilitate the associate new hire HSE orientation training, assessment of learning outcomes and performance reporting of engaging, innovative HSE training and learning.
  • Support workplace safety conditions & practices audits this includes but is not limited to evaluating engineering and work practice controls.
  • Support site safety committee meetings.
  • Provide various HSE training to site employees as required by STERIS business segments. 
  • Maintain appropriate HSE training matrixes within the company LMS

What You Will Need to Be Successful

  • High School Diploma or GED and minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred with 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must have understanding of health and safety injury/illness prevention and programs in healthcare or a related industry, including, but not limited to, injury avoidance, ergonomic expertise, material handling, bloodborne pathogen prevention, and employee on-boarding training.
  • Must have understanding of conducting facility audits, inspections.
  • Must have experience in giving effective oral presentation to a wide range of audiences ranging from hourly employees to management teams.
  • Must have ability to write clear, concise and efficient reports.

Skills

 

  • Communication – ability to communicate across functions, professional levels and backgrounds both orally and written.
  • Reasoning – must be able to evaluate complex employee relations issues and develop rational basis for decision-making that balances employee and company interests.
  • Computer Skills – working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint.  
  • Working knowledge of HSE regulations (such as General Industry 29 CFR 1910)  and an understanding of behavioral safety concepts is desired.
