The Role

As the Principal (Specialist) Manufacturing Engineer at the HuFriedyGroup, a STERIS company, you are a leader within the Manufacturing Engineering team supporting dental product manufacturing. In this role you will provide technical expertise in advanced engineering, process development, design and development of manufacturing systems, and equipment; and provide engineering and technical support for complex production equipment and processes for our Dental Products business segment. This role reports to the Director of Engineering and will provide mentorship to other engineers, and work to improve the Manufacturing Engineering team’s process development and capabilities. 

What you will do

  • Develops and improves manufacturing processes.
  • Leads and participates in the development of equipment and/or process enhancements to improve efficiency, product yield, and equipment reliability.
  • Provides expertise in troubleshooting and resolving equipment, systems, and process problems to prevent the occurrence of product and process nonconformities.
  • Determine capital equipment appropriations required for new process implementation and controls expenditures to ensure compliance with timing and budget requirements.
  • Provides technical leadership across functional teams on many different process improvements.
  • Ensures that process and material quality objectives are met during product launch and are congruent with production requirements.
  • Identifies and solves basic and complex problems, including the development of new design experiments and protocols, without assistance.
  • Devises new approaches to complex problems through adaptations and modifications of standard technical principles.
  • Responsible for managing project budget(s), as required.
  • Serves as project leader guiding the work of more junior engineers.
  • Acts as a project manager directing the work of multi-disciplined team, as required.
  • As deemed relevant the development and periodic review of standard operating procedures and specifications, testing procedures and specifications, documentation revision control, non-conformance reports, failure investigations, change orders, and corrective action/preventive action documentation is expected.

What you need to be successful

  • B.S. Engineering (Mechanical or Industrial is preferred) with a minimum of 10 years related experience, or M.S. with minimum of 4 years related experience. With a Ph.D., minimum 2 years related experience
  • Experience using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. SAP, preferred.
  • Knowledge and maintenance of pertinent standards including but not limited to 21 CFR, Part 820, ISO9001, Medical Device Directive, ISO13485, Canadian Medical  
  • Project management skills. Six Sigma Green Belt, preferred
  • Strong time management skills: ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Ability to manage Quality Systems/Compliance plans and multiple projects without assistance. This includes constructing detailed, accurate project schedules, interfacing with development groups and technical support groups in solving project problems and having the ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to conduct analysis of written procedures and submit procedural changes to meet corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and influence others through written and verbal methods.
  • Possess the ability to convince management on best course of action using evidence and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Effectively operate within cross-functional teams.
