Position Summary
The Technical Writer is responsible for creating and updating technical documentation, including manuals, instructions, and procedures, to support engineering change projects. This role ensures all content meets established standards for schedule, quality, and readability. The Technical Writer works independently on routine tasks and collaborates under the guidance of a Senior Technical Writer for more complex assignments. Additional responsibilities include managing translation processes, desktop publishing, and overseeing publication and distribution activities.
What You'll Do As a Technical Writer:
Technical:
- Executes the technical writing activities required from Engineering change(s) project(s), including information collection from the various Engineering disciplines, review and verification.
- Updates technical content of existing documentation to produce structured and clear instructions and procedures with excellent readability and usability for various audiences.
- Performs technical documentation publication and distribution.
- Contributes to the preparation of customer accessories instructions.
- Follows internal Quality System procedures as well as Corporate labeling standards.
- Solves problems related to technical writing, desktop publishing, publication and distribution.
- Translates From and Into French and English various types of technical documents.
- Familiar with CAD software such as Solidworks,Pro-E, etc. (desired)
Project:
- Works on understanding complex notions to update documents fit for diverse audiences from highly-specialized personnel to every-day users.
- Works independently with minimal supervision on routine activities and under general supervision of Senior Technical Writer on none-routine activities. Receives guidance of Senior Technical Writer on planning issues.
Management:
- Has no direct reports.
- Collaborates with groups outside of direct responsibilities including other engineering groups, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc.
- Assists in updating and revising technical documents for capital equipment and consumable products including, but not limited to, uncrating/installation instructions, operator manuals and maintenance manuals.
- Works with product and service engineers to implement engineering changes which affect product documentation.
- Under the supervision of a Senior Technical Writer or a Team Leader, participates in the adaptation of existing product documentation to integrate new products.
- Proofreads documents for readability, grammar accuracy, consistency with corporate standards and completeness. Obtains signed approvals as required.
- Responsible for self-direction in scheduling workload and prioritizing tasks under the supervision of a Senior Technical Writer.
- Performs other duties as assigned by designated personnel.
The Experience, Skills & Abilities Needed:
- Requires a minimum of 3 years of related technical writing experience.
- Bachelor of Engineering degree, Technical writing degree; Translation degree; Mechanical Engineering degree; Technical Writing Certificate or Engineering related certificate with 4 years experience also acceptable or any degree related to languages.
- English and French language levels: Written – Advanced; Spoken – Intermediate.
- Strong communication skills.
- Exceptional team player.
- Experience with stringent documentation control in a highly regulated industry; medical preferred.
- General knowledge in a variety of technologies and manufacturing methods, such as electricity, pneumatics, hydraulics, programming and overall system engineering.
- Proficient in Illustration software such as IsoDraw, Paint, etc.
- Proficient in Desktop publishing software such as Pagemaker, Framemaker, MS Office Suite, etc.
- Proficient in Document management system within company’s Quality management system (ISO-9001).
