    JOB PURPOSE                

    < >To manage the re-processing production of the site and to be responsible for all production and logistic staff within the team on a shift basis.To contribute to the management of a busy Sterile Services Unit, supervising a team of sterile services personnel on a day to day basis, ensuring that Sterile Service provision complies with current legislation.To provide leadership through personal example, promoting sound departmental communication and fostering good interpersonal relationships.

    < >To effectively and efficiently oversee the preparation of linen, instruments and equipment by the process of cleaning, inspection, assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.To oversee and rigorously check, wash, lay-up and pack sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.To utilise specialist knowledge across Sterile Service practice underpinned by theoretical knowledge.To safely operate and monitor machines and equipment (driers, washers, sterilisers) effectively and efficiently.To oversee that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system.To oversee that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets.To ensure that instruments not recorded on the computer system and supplementary instruments not identified by hospital are correctly tagged and labelled and logged into the system.To proactively monitor, evaluate and ensure that operational activities fully comply with required Health and Safety procedures and guidelines.To ensure that all designated staff are kept informed and trained on individual and team health and safety procedures in the workplace.To ensure that designated staffs are aware of the fire safety procedures and to act as designated area Fire Officer.To participate as an integral member of the sterile processing team and to actively contribute to suggestions of innovation, continuous improvement and best practice.To monitor and ensure that all production processed by designated team conforms to Synergy Health Sterilisation Services quality guidelines and ensuring complete contamination control.To effectively control the use of materials, equipment and consumables within the team work location reporting re-occurring faults and informing the Production Manager of any other requirements.To actively assist and support the Production Manager in the planning and operational process.To actively monitor absence levels, maintaining accurate records and liaising with team members in the management of absence.To coach, support and guide team members in line with the principles of Performance Management, setting and reviewing goals, acting as a mentor to the team and identifying training and development needs.To ensure the effective communication between senior management and production teams.To participate in the one call management rota service to maintain emergency services to customers.To make judgements involving a range of facts or situations at departmental level, which require analysis or comparison of a range of options.To assist in the dissemination of research based practice knowledge.To undertake any other duties or tasks as reasonably required.AND SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT


    The jobholder will comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other supplementary legislation and is required to take reasonable care to avoid injury during the course of work and co-operate with the Trust’s and Company’s Health and Safety policy and statutory regulations.

    Physical Effort

    < >To adhere to the Company Manual Handling policy and procedure in executing the safe transfer of instrumentation and sundry items around the Trust.  This will require moving heavy weights manually and using trolleys on a regular basis.There is a frequent requirement to use VDU and keyboard.

    < >To be able to maintain concentration where the work pattern is predictable for example, maintaining high standards of accuracy when checking the contents of instrument sets.Dealing with staffing issues

    < >Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.   


    Working Conditions

    < >The post entails occasional exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions in that direct exposure to body fluids is implicit in the Sterile Services Technician role.  Similarly implicit is the handling of chemical cleansing agents (irritant) with the protective equipment supplied and the risk of spillage that these procedures incur.

    Essential Criteria



    Educated to A Level standard with demonstrable verbal and numerical abilities.



    Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development and training


    NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience.

    Manual Handling

    Supervising People



    Substantial previous experience in Sterile Services and/or health related products.


    Experience of managing and supervising staff.


    Knowledge & Skills

    Ability to carry out instructions accurately.


    Ability to follow procedures.


    Ability to learn and understand the instruments and trays.


    Ability to plan and prioritise work.


    Ability to analyse and interpret data.


    Ability to solve complex problems in a pressurised environment.


    Advanced end user IT skills in order to operate the track and traceability (SynergyTrak) IT system.
