Position Summary

The Lead Microbiology Specialist directly oversees daily laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and industry regulations.  Duties impact the productivity, quality, reporting, and development of staff for the CE Services microbiology lab.  The lab supports environment monitoring product offerings across the entire business by processing samples and issuing reports to Customers.  Responsibilities also necessitate direct Customer contact including consultative recommendations.


  1. Provides daily technical oversight and support for laboratory personnel while coordinating activities to ensure that services are provided on schedule and within safety, quality, and cost objectives. (30%)
  2. Analyzes environmental monitoring samples, including colony counting, gram staining, characterization, sub-culturing, and microbial identifications (bacterial, yeast and mold) with Vitek 2 and other microscopic and macroscopic methods. This includes authoring reports and performing quality reviews on reports prepared by others before they are issued to Customers. (30%)
  3. Serves as a subject matter expert for Customers by providing remediation recommendations, risk assessments, laboratory investigations, non-conformance response, and complaint resolution. (10%)
  4. Identifies training needs for all laboratory individuals and then develops and provides training.  Ensures proper documentation and comprehension of the training program through formal and informal testing. (10%)
  5. Develops and implements new microbiological assays, equipment, and other services with supporting standard operating procedures (SOP’s). (10%)
  6. Ensures compliance with regulatory, industry and internal laboratory procedures, practices and standards (i.e. ISO 17025). (10%)

Required Experience

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in microbiology or related science discipline
  2. Minimum five years of microbiology laboratory experience
  3. Minimum three years of experience in a Customer facing role
  4. Working knowledge of ISO 17025 standard for testing and calibration laboratories
  5. Experience with pharmaceutical or other Life Sciences applications is preferred
  6. Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office
