Position Summary

The Senior Writer will serve as a key department resource to help educate, motivate and inspire different audiences through written and spoken communication. This role will support the Corporate Communications and Investor Relations department and will be primarily focused on employee and executive communications, financial communications, and significant projects in support of other corporate functions. The Senior Writer will work collaboratively with the Manager of Corporate Creative Services to create impactful communications when design services are required.

Depending upon business needs, time could be dedicated to supporting additional external needs, including message development for various stakeholder groups, news media and issues/crisis management.


  • Support the senior members of the Corporate Communications and Investor Relations department, with particular focus on drafting communications.
  • Develop internal communication plans to increase employee engagement and support business objectives.
  • Conduct research and interview subject matter experts to write engaging, smart, well thought-out and compelling content for employee communications, including letters, speeches, video scripts, emails, quotes, etc. that are easy to comprehend and free of jargon.
  • Draft and/or edit communications for key internal stakeholders, including senior management and corporate partners.
  • Manage Corporate Communication message platforms, including distribution lists, the STERIS Connection Employee Portal and other digital platforms with social media-like features.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of experience writing -- journalism, corporate communications, marketing communications or in a related public relations role.
  • Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills; ability to convert complex information into compelling content. Familiarity with Associated Press Style standards.
  • Creative, but with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong work ethic with high standards and the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team.
  • High energy and enthusiasm to pro-actively seek opportunities for continuous improvement and collaboration within the communications function.
  • Must be a self-starter comfortable with challenging the status quo and proposing new ways of communicating effectively across businesses, audiences and geographies.
  • Competence in project management; event planning experience is a plus.
  • Tech-savvy with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other communication enabling platforms (Yammer, SAP SuccessFactors, mobile apps, podcasting, etc.)
  • Experience in community relations, coaching / teaching
  • Developing presentations and employee communications
  • Issues management, media relations
  • Marketing communications
  • Knowledge and use of social media in a business setting
  • Video creation (ability to write or manage script writing and video planning).
