Sr. Technical Writer & Editor

As a Sr. Technical Writer here at STERIS, you will be responsible for creating and revising technical documents that support the production and marketing of capital, service and consumable products. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching, writing and editing technical documentation, utilizing structured authoring tools as well as desktop publishing and graphics software and hardware. The Sr. Writer is responsible for leading projects and inputting all data for required metrics. 

What will you do as Sr. Technical Writer & Editor?

  • Create and edit technical document content for capital equipment and consumable products including, but not limited to, capital equipment technical data, uncrating instructions, installation instructions, operator manuals, maintenance manuals, and consumable technical literature.
  • Work within the PLM system to create content and effect changes as needed for content. Ensure system templates, style guides and architecture are maintained according to the work instructions or direction of team lead or manager.
  • Assist team lead in updating templates when directed for new projects.
  • Lead project teams on the writing of document content for new product releases. Maintain all required status and metrics for group.
  • Work with product and service engineers to implement engineering changes which affect product documentation. . Manage change requests within Product Lifetime Management (PLM) system as needed.
  • Under the direction of a Manager or Team Leader, create, develop, and produce new product documentation.
  • Provide guidance to technical writer/editor or technical documentt editor as requested by Team Leader or Manager. 
  • Proofread documents for readability, grammar accuracy, consistency with corporate standards, and completeness. Obtain formal approvals for documents as required using proper corporate procedures.
  • Coordinate translations of new product documentation as directed by marketing, engineering, and/or management.
  • Responsible for self-direction in scheduling workload and prioritizing tasks. Maintain status of each project or task daily.
  • Assist department personnel in determining department/project priorities and resources allocation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by designated personnel.     

What Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience do you need?

  • Seven plus years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a technical field with strong secondary emphasis on language skills or equivalent experience required.  
  • Degree in Technical Writing preferred.
  • Familiarity with Product Lifetime Managements (PLM) system and structure content architecture required.
  • Minimum one year experience with structured authoring and Extensible Markup Language (XML) required.  
  • Minimum four years experience with desktop publishing hardware or XML software strongly recommended.
  • Experience with image creation and editing tools (e.g., PhotoShop, Creo, etc.) also required.
  • Three years experience in industrial graphics and print production and/or seven years experience in writing technical documents strongly desired.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to lead content creation projects towards on time completion required.
  • Must be able to communicate technical concepts to various audiences in clear, concise language.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills necessary.
  • Must be able to read and absorb complex details quickly, work effectively against deadline pressures and handle a number of projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
