Position Summary

The Senior Scientist is responsible for supporting new product development through innovative research and through developing technical expertise in STERIS's Infection Prevention Technology product segments.  The Senior Scientist will work directly with the NPD team, engineering and cross-functional teams to enhance the sophistication and compliance of new, unique infection prevention solutions to meet the customer’s varying unmet needs.

Duties

  • Contribute to the development and validation of disinfection and sterilization processes in the areas of and liquid chemical reprocessing and vaporized hydrogen peroxide systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in Engineering, Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing and Sourcing to launch new products.
  • Provide support for currently manufactured products to deliver on business revenue and growth objectives including product enhancements, material substitutions, second sourcing and regulatory filings.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of STERIS scientific technologies and sterilization science related to Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide and Liquid Chemical Reprocessing Systems.
  • Design, develop, and carry out test plans for assigned projects with minimal management input. Independently perform standard analyses on samples.  Present results to management.
  • Perform analyses and resolves issues using critical thinking skills and problem-solving techniques.
  • Participate in refining current techniques, troubleshooting problems and documenting processes, procedures and results.

  • Perform initial evaluations on new technologies or methods for incorporation into STERIS products or laboratory methods.
  • Manage projects or sections of projects and may provide direction to assigned staff and/or the project.
  • Operate and maintain instrumentation, define and measure quality metrics and report results in an appropriate manner.
  • Draft and develop design controls, risk management and design transfer documentation.
  • Display excellent laboratory skills and an advanced understanding of relevant scientific principles theories.
  • Work with little to no supervision/self-motivated.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

  • Requires 8+ years of related laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment.
  • Experience in product development project leadership is desired.
  • Understanding of design controls is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to train/coach/supervise other scientists.
  • Travel up to 10%

Preferred Experience

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret SDS files and safely handle organic and inorganic chemicals.
  • Maintain knowledge of FDA and EPA requirements for method validation and stability.
  • Assure efficient laboratory operation through acquisition and inventory control of consumables lab supplies and chemicals.    
  • Practical working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Independently operate various standard instruments and perform basic maintenance according to established methods.
  • Demonstrate proficient writing skills for the following:
    • SOPs/WIs and their revisions
    • Test plans/protocols and recognizing when modifications are needed
    • Laboratory reports
    • OOS/OOT reports
