Position Summary

     Responsible for assigned commodities to manage the supplier base and products purchased from outside sources to conform to STERIS’s engineering documents, policies, procedures, work instructions, and ISO/GMP requirements. The senior buyer responsibilities do not vary in the scope or function, but in the authorization levels and strategic commodity duties.  This role is specifically targeting to support new product development and will work directly with R&D Engineering and Strategic Sourcing in procurement of prototype commodities.  


  1. Secure quotes from qualified suppliers of assigned materials to obtain most favorable prices and services consistent with quality requirements.
  2. Purchase product to support new product development, manufacturing and non inventory requirements.
  3. Expedite purchase orders in order to maintain material flow and provide customer requests.
  4. Maintain appropriate purchasing files as required.
  5. Receive and organize incoming prototype parts and materials. 
  6. Negotiate and facilitate the return of rejected and obsolete material.
  7. Reconcile Accounts Payable discrepancies.
  8. Manage commodity to meet strategic position of the company.
  9. Select and maintained suppliers to support new product development initiatives and needs.   

Required Experience

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
  2. Minimum of four (4) + years’ experience in purchasing, quality control, engineering, marketing, manufacturing, or industrial engineering.
  3. Possess strong negotiating skills.
  4. Capable of reading and interpreting blueprints.
  5. Technical knowledge of components in the assigned commodities to effectively communicate with and support technical departments at STERIS and the suppliers. NPD experience required
  6. Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  7. Must possess a high level of integrity as well as excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, communication, and computer skills to effectively utilize ERP system and Microsoft Office products

  2. Communication and follow through on detailed tasks.
  3. Able to work through sometimes ambiguous inputs
  4. Strong Microsoft Excel Skills
