Position Summary

The Senior Director, Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance is responsible for setting the strategy and global management of STERIS’ HSE programs and processes. Key objectives include building an effective culture of safety, incident and accident prevention, regulatory compliance, and performance outcomes to protect employees, limit the risk to the company, and enhance the reputation of STERIS.

To support this efforts and outcomes, this role will lead and direct a team of Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance professionals that are responsible for program and policy development, training, compliance activities, and ensuring STERIS continues to excel with our world class safety excellence efforts.  In partnership with top business leaders, this incumbent will drive the strategic direction for STERIS and share best practices and results achieved from our programs.  Responsible for leading the World Class Safety Excellence model that utilizes the DuPont Safety Resources Guidelines. Also, incorporate the OSHA VPP Star, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems within the STERIS facilities.

Duties

  • Provide resources to national & international site management for improving the health and safety of the workplace. Initiates and oversees the implementation of health and safety programs: Provides Leading and Lagging data, reports, and other information, coordinates internally and externally provided health and safety services, medical surveillance testing, hazard assessments and other activities. 
  • Leads HSE activities during acquisitions.  Conducts audits and provides senior leadership with recommendations to deploy safety programs to new entities. 
  • Identifies, appraises, provides advice, makes recommendations for correction, and oversees implementation of corrective actions necessary to protect the Company, employees, and financial resources. Conducts routine health and safety observations. Provides recommendations for improvement to management and oversees improvement progress. Reviews and evaluates health and safety-related incidents, makes recommendations for improvements, oversees improvement implementation. 
  • Develops and implements accident prevention and loss control methods, procedures, and programs. Develops measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety systems. Makes recommendations for and oversees implementation of modifications to achieve optimum results. 
  • Intervenes in all contacts with OSHA and EPA (National & International), including contesting citations and guiding appeals. Reviews, gather, and prepares information in response to OSHA requests. Coordinates with management, local safety professionals, and others regarding responses to OSHA and EPA citations. 
  • Provides safety-training resources to management, in conjunction with others including local safety staff. Oversees health and safety training content and monitors training compliance for mandatory programs (e.g., hazards communication, PPE, hearing conservation, lockout/tagout, etc.). 
  • Participates in internal committees and external professional organizations. Participates in Health and Safety Central Steering Committees, Ergonomics Teams, Emergency Response Team, Vehicle Safety Committee, Wellness Team or others as applicable. Participates In outside organizations such as American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), National Safety Council (NSC) and OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Association. 
  • Coordinates the Workers’ Compensation Program with the Director of Risk Management. Oversees injury-reporting system; monitors claims and cost status, works with medical providers and/or Worker’s Compensation carrier. Makes recommendations and oversees implementation of programs to reduce Workers’ Compensation costs. Prepares statistics/reports and provides necessary information to management.

  • Coordinates applicable vendor products and services, including safety, loss prevention, and industrial hygiene services. Makes recommendations for cost-effective, quality vendor products and services to support health and safety needs. Coordinates with vendors for the provision of approved products and services. Primary contact for safety hazard prevention activities. 
  • Works with architects, contractors, and local facility management to coordinate the integration of safety at all facilities. Includes: needs analysis, site selection and recommendation and development of the organization’s facility plan. 
  • Formulates plans with the assistance of appropriate Company employees to ensure all facilities are in compliance with all appropriate regulatory agencies and authorities, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, FAA, etc.  Directs the HSE audit and inspection program for all STERIS facilities. 
  • Directs the World Class Safety Excellence initiatives function for all STERIS Employees. 
  • Works with site managers to ensure our emissions to air and discharges to water must comply with applicable regulatory requirements and permits. 
  • Works with site managers to ensure that any hazardous wastes that are generated, that procedures are in place to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. 
  • Coordinates with site managers to endeavor to minimize all energy used and waste produced by our manufacturing and other sites. 
  • Ensures that all sites have active safety committees, conduct daily/weekly safety observations, conduct incident investigations. 
  • Must have a clear understanding and knowledge of all international HSE regulations pursuant to the countries we have facilities.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

  • To achieve the knowledge and capabilities required to lead this function, the incumbent must have accumulated subject matter expertise in this area and experience successfully leading an HSE function in an international organization.  As such, a minimum of 18 years of relevant, progressive experience in this area is required.   
  • Experience would include International and U.S. experience with Health, Safety and Environmental compliance, laws, regulations, and applying best practices to promote safe work environments and culture.    
  • Experience leading HSE professionals internationally and providing the strategic direction, program governance, mentoring, coaching, and support to help the company meet objectives.
