Position Summary

The Engineering R&D Technician is a technical role that supports R&D design initiatives within the Surgical Solutions business.  The primary focus of this role will be supporting the full cycle process of fabricating test prototypes. The Engineering R&D Technician will work to conceive effective test fixture designs, design and fabricate fixtures, and build the units from raw materials.  The R&D Technician must have a strong foundation of working knowledge of both Mechanical and Electrical concepts. 


  • Assist with the design, development, building and qualifying of automated, turnkey test equipment
  • Develop and fabricate test equipment in line with test specifications under the direction and guidance of direct supervisor
  • Execute tests using test equipment that measures temperature, electricity, light, flow, pressure, strain, force, distance, time, noise, weight etc.
  • Collect and analyze test data/results, document results and outcomes.  Provide analysis of results to Engineering and R&D team members
  • Support the design and fabrication/assembly of both working and visual prototype models. Materials include foam, plastics, and various metals
  • Analyze equipment failures and factory work stoppage problems and provide solutions
  • Fabricates, repairs, improves designs of and constructs mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment
  • Maintain storage and calibration schedule for calibrated equipment
  • Execute technical judgement and decision making
  • Procure equipment and supplies for labs and engineering hardware
  • Coordinate with outside calibration vendors effectively
  • Maintains detailed and up to date test data in laboratory notebook and active test logs
  • Support Customer escalations, when needed
  • Support manufacturing ramp up, and design transfer during product development
  • Install (heavy) equipment in labs involving some heavy lifting and use of lifts/hoists/forklift. 
  • Maintain facility in a safe, clean and orderly manner at all times in compliance with OSHA VPP standards and STERIS SOPs

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

  • Two-year Associate Degree or equivalent, apprenticeship or comparable specialized study in mechanical and/or electrical engineering, beyond high school level.
  • 3 years of hands-on Mechanical and Electrical experience
  • Must have broad base of knowledge with understanding and skills in the following areas:
    1. Electrical
    2. Fabrication
    3. Tool Making
    4. Machining
  • Experience and knowledge of the following areas preferred:
    1. Rapid Prototyping
    2. Testing and Design Controls
    3. Installation
    4. Design
  • Must be very proficient in the use of machine shop equipment and all hand tools including saws, sanders, drills, grinders, press, brake, shear, lathe, milling machine
  • Able to operate test equipment that measures temperature, electricity, light, flow, pressure, strain, force, distance, time, noise and weight.
  • CNC experience with working knowledge of programming and equipment.
  • Works from prints, sketches, written and verbal instructions.                                              
  • Ability to read wiring/electrical and piping schematics and engineering drawings. 
  • Electrical experience/training in use of and design of AC and DC circuits up to 480VAC 3ph.
  • Piping experience and ability to use electrical test equipment and measuring tools necessary.
  • Proficient in computer use and applications and familiarity with Data Acquisition systems
  • TIG Welding experience a plus
  • Rapid prototyping experience a plus – fused deposition modeling (FDM)
  • Forklift experience preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Prior experience in Document Retention or PLM Software preferred
  • Travel to Customers and operations sites, including up to 10% internationally
