The R&D Design Engineer within US Endoscopy provides engineering support for all project concepts under consideration for development in the field of gastroenterology. Involves concept development from a clinically functional viability standpoint, as well as developing functional mechanical prototypes. Provides basic engineering research involving materials used in the construction of products, as well as assistance with viability of manipulation of components and materials from a manufacturing standpoint. 


  • Works with clinical, marketing and technical staff to develop device concepts and prototypes.
  • Develops prototypes using a multifaceted approach:
    • Brainstorms concepts and provides multiple designs to approach a problem statement.
    • Develops solid models for various additive/subtractive manufacturing processes, machining, extruding or molding. 
    • Works well with highly skilled technicians to produce devices includes micro laser, TIG and resistance welding of metals.  Assembly processes such as crimping, gluing and soldering are also utilized in creative manners to obtain working concepts.  Solid knowledge of machining is also required.
    • The devices may be catheter based utility tools.  They may also include electromechanical systems.  Concepts can also be of the production intent of stand-alone molded or over molded devices.
  • Analyzes device/prototype performance in bench, invitro or invivo labs.
  • Expands technical knowledge in materials and technology in order to effectively support the technical needs of the organization.
  • The ability to research a particular technology or material alternative to a current design mode or process is imperative.  This will span various material types and processes used in the design and occasionally the production of our devices.
  • Provides project updates to technical and non-technical audiences (project meetings, board meetings, etc.)
  • Works within cross-functional team structure to meet goals.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; Associates Degree, apprenticeship, or comparable specialized study in engineering will be considered.
  • Must have at least 2 years of professional work experience in a machining & CAD design environment. 
  • Solid 3D CAD skills, familiar with rapid prototyping, machining, and prototyping concept skills akin to small model building.  Fundamental base of engineering calculations also required.
  • Must communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to focus on priority tasks, learn new things quickly, and deliver creative and simple solutions to complex and challenging opportunities.
  • Must have a commitment to teamwork and quality and be able to manage multiple projects concurrently, while satisfying changing project design requirements needs and priorities.
  • Ability to interact with people of a variety of skill strength backgrounds in order to propagate efficient development of medical devices.  Technicians, engineers, clinicians and managers and other support staff may be part of daily interaction.
  • Must be able to do theoretical calculations and be comfortable with finding information and equations to solve problems.  This may also be in concert with designing/performing feasibility tests which also substantiate technical issues.
  • Must be able to work with outside vendors or consultants as required to obtain information, procure components or prototypes.
