Position Summary

The Process Safety Manager establishes and ensures compliance with the organization’s overall Standards and Policies relative to all applicable U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations, and country specific rules and regulations, for all modalities of ethylene oxide or other gas processing safety and security in US, Canada & Costa Rica. You will collaboratively manage business unit facility ethylene oxide safety programs through the development and implementation of assessment tools, models, and environmental reports. 


Regulatory Compliance 

Ensure and provide safety training for ethylene oxide operations, including training for affected and authorized operator personnel.

Performs or ensures that a qualified individual performs OSHA process safety management (PSM), EPA risk management plan (RMP), California accidental release program (CalARP), and/or other ethylene oxide safety, compliance audits at least annually and that findings and recommendations are documented, presented to management and appropriate follow-up mechanisms are in place to ensure compliance.

Working with engineering, maintenance and operations, maintain appropriate RAGAGEP for covered processes.

Develop process safety and risk management programs and procedures.

Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA). Participate in safety workshops (i.e., HAZIDS, HAZOPS), including workshop preparation, scribe, and reporting.

Conduct Mechanical Integrity (MI) and Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) audits and gap assessments, working with plant management and AST engineering to address findings.

Assist HSE Managers and facilities with implementation of ethylene oxide exposure control programs in accordance with applicable local, state, or national regulations.

Program Management 

Manage projects related to OSHA process safety management (PSM), EPA risk management plan (RMP), California accidental release program, process hazard analysis (PHA) programs and general process safety risk management.

Provides guidance and insight to the development and delivery of technical training programs working collaboratively with the Technical Training and Development Team, focused on improving management and employee technical skill sets in ethylene oxide safety and security.

Develops and provides guidance for the administration of a uniform ethylene oxide safety-training program for all personnel required to interface with ethylene oxide operations. 

Provides 24-hour consultative assistance and emergency response to facility management and ethylene oxide operators and advises, or serves as, the designated incident commander for ethylene oxide related emergency response activities.

Provides oversite and guidance to all Customer processing programs that include hazardous materials such as biological, energy-containing, flammables, etc. by developing, implementing and managing solutions for those Customer Products.

Advises the Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) Leadership Team on matters related to gas safety, equipment design, processing interfacing with equipment suppliers, gas suppliers and AST Engineering regarding any pertinent design or operational issues as relates to all existing and planned equipment.


Education Degree
Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience

Minimum five to seven (5-7) years of experience in process safety engineering and/or management, preferably in the chemical industry.

Minimum five to seven (5-7) years of experience with development of written PSM programs, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and PSM/RMP/CalARP auditing.

Minimum five (5) years general industry health and safety experience.

Minimum five (5) years developing and providing safety and health training.

Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred

Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate.

Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.

Requires computer literacy to include word processing, spreadsheet and software capabilities.

Effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated through prior experience.

Ability to travel up to 40-50% annually
