Position Summary

JOIN us in our efforts as a Optical/Lighting Engineering Intern

The intern will be involved in next generation product development for the surgical environment including surgical capital equipment and virtual operating room digital integration systems.  The team environment, consists of a well-rounded cross functional new product development team. The Intern will work on new and existing LED-based surgical lights, including assisting with the design, build and test of prototypes and demonstrations to assess the technical feasibility of various product concepts and explore technical solutions that meet Customer and business needs. The intern will gain hands-on experience with the processes, documentation and cross functional collaboration required to successfully develop capital medical equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Contribute to the design, assembly and testing of optical components and assemblies
  • Explore various lighting technologies
  • Identify and evaluate commercially available and custom-designed components
  • Design, build and test functional prototypes to demonstrate product concepts
  • Design, develop, enhance and maintain test fixtures for measuring the optical performance of surgical lighting systems
  • Develop and document appropriate test protocols and procedures
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Follow industry codes, standards, and recommendations
  • Contribute to design reviews and product and process verification
  • Communicate results and findings
  • Maintain a safe working environment and follow all safety procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (safety glasses, etc, as required) in the labs.

Experience, Knowledge or Skills

  • Ability to gather and analyze web-based information and information from STERIS subject matter experts.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply user manuals to learn how to implement and control various commercial products.

Education

Minimum Educational Requirement: Successful completion of Junior level coursework or above by May 2019, with a Major in one or more of the following: Physics, Electrical Engineering or  Mechanical Engineering.

  • Lab based coursework as well as practical experience in designing, building and testing electro-mechanical prototypes is desired. 
  • Basic proficiency in CAD is highly desired. 
  • Experience or interest in computer programming using applications such as LabView is also desired.
