Position Summary

Co-Op: January 2022 through August 2022

The Mechanical Engineering Co-op will be part of a team involved in next generation product development for the surgical environment.  As part of a cross functional new product development team, the Co-op will be responsible for 3D CAD design tasks, 2D drawings, hands-on assembly and verification testing. There will also be exposure to processes and documentation required to successfully develop medical equipment and an opportunity to gain hands on experience with rapid prototyping methodology, troubleshooting, product testing, and interaction with other engineering disciplines. 

Duties

  • Assist with components and assembly design for products and test fixtures
  • Utilize Creo to create 3D models of the designs and detailed 2D drawings
  • Develop demonstrations of various new product concepts
  • Build and test functional prototypes to demonstrate product design concepts.
  • Develop test protocols then collect and analyze data
  • Develop mathematical models, applying statistics and equation describing physical phenomena
  • Follow medical and industry codes, standards, and regulations 
  • Take part in design reviews and verification activities
  • Research various technologies, manufacturing methods, and materials
  • Communication of designs and test results to engineering and cross functional teams
  • Maintain a safe working environment and follow all safety procedures.  

Required Experience

  • Student pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Completion of Sophomore year coursework by May 2021.  
  • Must have completed at least one 3D modeling course.
  • Must have experience working with basic hand tools.
  • Completion of a prior internship or technical/mechanical work experience preferred.
  • Experience using 3D CAD to model designs and then able to translate into 2D CAD drawings that can be used to produce prototypes.
  • Hands-on experience with various tools used in basic assembly or in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Requires organization, communication, problem solving, troubleshooting skills and a mature approach to cross functional working environments.
  • Lab based coursework as well as practical experience in designing, building and testing electro-mechanical prototypes is highly desired.  
  • Experience or interest in computer programming using applications such as Matlab and LabView is also desired.
  • General proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
