Position Summary

In this role you will ensure the development, implementation and maintenance of programs and procedures relative to environmental regulatory compliance. This individual will determine the potential impact on operations and help to ensure corporate expectations are being met by studying new and existing environmental laws, regulations and standards affecting one or more STERIS business units.  Collaboratively manage business unit facility environmental compliance programs through the development and implementation of assessment tools, models, and environmental reports.  This position requires a thorough understanding of air permitting regulations and familiarity with water and solid waste streams. Position requires travel up to 50%. 



Regulatory Compliance 

  • Manage compliance with environmental permitting requirements for existing operations as well as potential operational changes, expansions or facility construction projects through appropriate regulatory research followed by coordination with operations and engineering management.
  • Aid facilities to be compliant with environmental and transportation safety regulatory reporting by analyzing requirements, establishing and communicating a process to ensure timely and accurate filing of required reports.
  • Participate as a member of the various business unit HSE teams in audit processes, facilitating in the development and implementation of effective corrective actions, follow-up and review processes, and appropriate education and training to ensure sustainable solutions.
  • Manage existing and future source testing as required by environmental permits.  This includes communication templates, protocol documentation and contractor selection, preparation, checklists and final test report reviews.

Program Management 

  • Provide ongoing updates, education and training to STERIS business unit management and facilities relative to environmental objectives and initiatives, as well as environmental law and regulations.
  • Manage the proactive response to regulatory changes as well as potential or pending changes through ongoing monitoring, research and analysis of regulator trends and directives and the potential impact to STERIS.
  • Oversees facility pollution prevention and waste minimization strategies through development of effective, cost-saving solutions and alternatives to challenging facility concerns, with a goal of minimizing emissions and operating expense while improving process efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with applicable local, state, federal and international environmental regulators.


Program Development and Implementation 

  • Develop and implement group and site-specific procedures and programs designed to help ensure compliance with environmental rules and regulations.
Education Degree
  • Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience
  • Minimum of five years experience in environmental compliance.  Previous management experience is a plus.  Prior experience in the implementation of HSE systems (e.g. ISO 14001) is beneficial.
  • Ability to develop and manage Environmental Management System databases, ensuring completion of all requirements.
  • Demonstrated competency in the implementation and management of federal, state and local hazardous waste requirements.
  • Demonstrated competency in the implementation and management of Clean Air Act and state air permitting requirements. 
  • Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate.
  • Requires ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
  • Requires computer literacy to include work processing, spreadsheet and software capabilities.
  • Effective interpersonal and cross functional group leadership skills as demonstrated through prior experience.
  • Above average organizing, analyzing and Level 4 math skills (advanced algebra and/or calculus and/or statistics) to determine organizational customer and regulatory problems and formulate corrective action plans; attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to influence people in the opinions, attitudes or judgments to generalize, evaluate and decide to adapt to situations under stress.
  • Ability to travel up to 50%.
  • Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms, bells, horns, etc.
