Position Summary

STERIS is a leader in sterile processing equipment, instrument management and reprocessing needs with integrated product and service programs. Our sterilization solutions help protect Hospitals' valuable surgical instruments to increase productivity and help enhance patient and personnel safety.

The  Manager, Controls Engineering will join a fast paced research and development team that develops innovative capital equipment marketed to hospitals thorughout the world. You will lead a team of approximately 4-7 electrical engineers and technicians in the development of electronic control systems and accessories using best practices in compliance with STERIS operating procedures.  

What you will do

•    Provide feedback, coaching, and performance assessments to direct reports.  
•    Assign engineers to tasks across multiple projects and guide execution.  
•    Coordinate with project managers in creating schedules for hardware releases and associated documentation.  
•    Utilize performance and quality metrics to refine development processes and employ productivity tools to accomplish goals in more efficient ways.
•    Provide support for manufacturing and service teams to ensure quality, yields, production schedules and customer satisfaction.
•    Support product platform teams with electronics integration and verification.
•    Review output of direct reports including requirements, designs, test plans, test results, and other deliverables, providing guidance and feedback. 
•    Mentor team to propagate good design principles and development practices.
•    Lead team with investigation of new technologies.
•    Identify, evaluate, and implement tools and processes for continuously improving team performance.
•    Create and maintain work instructions which comply with regulatory guidelines and corporate polices.
•    Collaborate with groups outside of direct responsibilities including other engineering disciplines, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, and Operations for project planning, analysis of product requirements, and solution proposals.
•    Set objectives for direct reports, assessing performance and providing feedback and coaching throughout the year. 
•    Continuously assess team’s competencies and addresses gaps via training and recruitment.
•    Maintain appropriate staffing levels via filling open permanent positions and contracting with external temporary workers and consultants.

What you need to be succesful

•    Requires 12+ years of related engineering experience. 
•    Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Computer Engineering.   (A degree in another Engineering discipline may be acceptable with proven electrical/electronics education and/or training and demonstrated electrical engineering experience.)
•    Advanced degree desirable.
•    10 or more years of experience in the design and development of electronic and firmware systems.
•    Experience working in medical device industry or other regulated industry which require formalized development processes strongly desired.
•    3+ years of experience in managing and coaching team of engineers

•    Demonstrated leader and/or technical expert within an engineering development organization.
•    Exceptional team player with leadership responsibilities.
•    Capable of solving complex engineering problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and test results.
•    Strong communication and problem solving skills.
