Position Summary

Leads the software development efforts for a project including task identification and assignments and status collection and reporting. Works with systems engineers and software team to analyze product/system-level requirements and translate them into software specifications and architectural solutions.   Provides technical feasibility of new product concepts.  Makes recommendations for software solutions for future product development.


  • Leads the design and implementation of applications according to corporate standards and procedures and department operating procedures on new and sustaining engineering projects.
  • Proposes solutions and defines technical direction for future development efforts.
  • Drives the use appropriate design principles to ensure robust, maintainable software applications.
  • Coordinates design reviews to ensure appropriate rigor and designs meet expectations of regulatory requirements and product needs
  • Mentors junior engineers to propagate good design principles and development practices to the team.
  • Investigates new software technologies and tools.
  • Responsible for creation of software development process documentation to include architectural documents, requirements, design, and interface specifications, and verification documentation.   Serves as a process champion for continued improvement in software development processes and tools.  
  • Oversees creation of software validation plans and reports.
  • Work as a collaborative team member in engineering projects.  Collaborates with groups outside of direct responsibilities including other engineering groups, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc. for project planning, analysis of product requirements, and to outline proposed solutions.
  • Manages external contract engineers assigned to project.
  • Reviews and refines software estimates for release features and functions.  Develops software plans and schedules making commitments for software deliveries.   Identifies resource needs to complete software deliverables.
  • Reviews software change requests and defects and assigns them to software project team members.
  • Recommends release of software for production release based upon software validation results.


Education/Required Experience

  • Requires 7+ years of related engineering experience.
  • Bachelor in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering required. Advanced degree may be expected.

  • Demonstrated experience in C/C++, OOA/OOP, Graphical User Interface development, Real Time Operating Systems, Embedded Software Development, Configuration Management, Integrated Development Environments, IDE Formal Software Development Processes.
  • In depth knowledge of hardware platforms/targets and networks
  • Proven experience leading/directing  a software team with demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in  a software team from concept through commercialization.
  • Demonstrated software project planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software testing, risk management and software quality assurance methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to examine complex problems, including data limits with multiple inputs, and exercise judgment to determine software design direction or actions.Exceptional technical leader
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Six Sigma / Reliability best practices
  • Experience with design controls (process) in a highly regulated industry; medical preferred.
  • Proven experience of a leading member of a team to take a concept through commercialization.
  • Understanding of Customer/market demands
  • Travel up to 10% (including international)
