Position Summary

The Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist reports to the Senior Manager, Global HSE Operating Systems. This role will assist in developing, deploying, training, and ongoing improvements and administration of the STERIS HSE Management Systems (i.e., Navigator, Cority, and equivalent or complimentary HSE systems) throughout STERIS and its associated businesses.  

This individual will assist the organization with regards to the modernization of company HSE Performance Standards, Guidelines and other HSE documents, ensuring alignment with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.  In addition, this position will include updating and maintenance of the HSE Sharepoint portal, administration of the Les C. Vinney Pinnacle Award, and support within the department to manage related expenses within the department.

He/she will also work to implement health, safety and environmental (HSE) strategies within the company on an as needed basis.

This role is based onsite at our Operational Headquarters in Mentor, OH.
 

Duties

Support HSE Global Operating Solution(s) (50%) 

  • Supports HSE electronic management systems, (Navigator/other) improving HSE recordkeeping, compliance, audits, risk management, legal register, and Management of Change processes.  
  • With direction, Implement and support technology and/or software-driven solutions on time and within budget to meet business and corporate HSE requirements, compliance with internal company standards and external voluntary compliance certifications.
  • Monitors and updates the HSE SharePoint portal (intranet/internet) and advises of changes.
  • Supports global HSE team members and business segment leaders to ensure user adoption, training, and outputs of new technology and/or Navigator applications.
  • Assists in the development of a corporate self-assessment, internal audit and Process Safety Management (PSM) IT solutions to demonstrate compliance with internal HSE policies and programs.
  • Serves as a resource and technical advisor regarding the Navigator Global Operating System and to help ensure that HSE issues/concerns are identified and addressed on a proactive basis.
  • Provide timely/effective review of Corrective/Preventive Actions that are assigned based on business value versus impact.

 

HSE Support and Administration (35%) 

  • Support the corporate HSE department in all matters related to HSE for all locations and service teams within STERIS.  Additional support is provided to other STERIS stakeholders such as but not limited to; Regulatory, Sustainability, and Product Safety.
  • Provides assistance in developing and implementing occupational medicine, industrial hygiene and toxicology policies, programs, practices, measurement techniques, and management systems to meet strategic objectives.
  • Support the implementation of the OH and Industrial Hygiene Risk Assessment strategy to align with STERIS HSE Policy.
  • Perform OH/IH database administrative and technical tasks as needed.
  • HSE support for Mentor Headquarters campus. 
  • Under direction, prepares various reports, compiling and maintaining statistical information for leading and lagging HSE control charts and related dashboards. Prepares and distributes meeting agenda, records meeting minutes for committee meetings and other important meetings (department, etc.), and prepares and distributes minutes to the appropriate person(s).  
  • Works closely with the HSE staff to set up training classes, which includes sending the meeting notice, tracking the attendees, and other various tasks, as needed. This also includes coordinating or finalizing logistics such as setting the location of the training and room set up. 
  • Develop with guidance visual aids and presentations for HSE training, HSE staff meetings, senior management meetings, Compliance Committee meetings and Board meetings. 

 

Support HSE Data Analysis (15%) 

  • Provide analysis of HSE performance for STERIS, reporting business segments and other entities as required. Effectively use analytical tools, illustrations and narratives to effectively present performance to various downstream Customers such as but not limited to the STERIS Senior Management Team (SMT), STERIS Compliance Board and other stakeholder groups.
  • Assists the corporate HSE staff in analyzing HSE leading and lagging metrics for global operations, identifying emerging trends or target hazards recommending appropriate remedial action.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Minimum of 1-3 years professional HSE experience in an operational environment
  • HSE IT solution experience that includes implementing or maintaining new technologies
  • General awareness, understanding and practical experience in supporting HSE programs in conformance with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards
     

Preferred Experience

  • Project management skills and proven ability to execute results.
  • Analytical skills, ability to develop reports, manage data quality, develop dashboards and KPI performance reporting using Excel or Tableau.
  • Highly organized and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Strong relationship building skills, able to instill trust and influence at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Training skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience in Tableau, Microsoft PowerBI or other business intelligence reporting software would be beneficial.
