Position Summary

The DOT and Hazmat Compliance Manager is responsible for assuring STERIS is compliant with global dangerous goods regulations, thereby allowing logistics operations, sales, service, and R&D groups, to transport regulated consumables to STERIS customers.  Additionally, this manager provides internal guidance and assistance during product conception and design, to achieve transportation efficiency in the early stages of product development.   This manager also provides transportation leadership to STERIS operations involved in commercial vehicle and commercial driver license programming. 


Secondarily, this position has responsibility to support the Corporate HSE team with workplace safety initiatives. The incumbent will regularly monitor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. This individual will play a support role in ensuring STERIS provides a safe work environment to all employees, visitors and Customers.

What You Will Do
  • Provide on-call assistance and expertise to logistics, sales, R&D, customer service and all other global STERIS and subsidiary operations.
  • Evaluate the annual need for and maintain Hazardous Materials Certificates of Registrations for STERIS Corporation, and all wholly owned U. S. subsidiaries, compliant with 49CFR, Part 107, Subpart G.  
  • Originate new and maintain current domestic or foreign competent authority approvals or special permits, for any products requiring this.  Ensure approvals and permits are used correctly by STERIS logistics operations and in accordance with the approval or permit. Assist in development of new products which may require applying for an approval or permit as applicable, in accordance with 49CFR, Part 107, Subparts B and H, or state competent authority for foreign approvals and special permits. 
  • Develop and maintain Corporate DOT and Hazardous Materials Compliance Policies and Procedures Manuals.  Ensure these manuals reflect current regulations through awareness of Federal Register updates, modal specific regulations changes, international regulations changes, and use of industry resources, such as DGAC and The Journal of Hazardous Materials Transportation.  
  • Assist manufacturing, services, and production plants in development and review of hazmat SOPs.  Evaluate work instructions for completeness and accuracy and advise on content. 
  • Provide relevant information to the departmental Sharepoint site and edit to maintain currency.   The Sharepoint site contains hazmat resources for use by internal customers and includes training modules, self-assessment forms, and annual registration documents. 
  • Work with facility management to evaluate hazmat training and hazmat security programs and provide necessary feedback.  Provide or assist manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and distribution centers in necessary hazardous material training, i.e. DOT 49 CFR, IATA, ICAO, IMDG and other national and international hazardous materials transportation regulations.
What You Will Do (continued)
  • Work with business unit management and the Security Officer on matters concerning transportation security including developing policy, procedures, training and auditing of transportation security programs.
  • Coordinate remedial actions as a STERIS CHEMTREC contact.  Assist in planning any initial emergency response caused by a STERIS chemical product, disposing of materials involved in an incident if appropriate, and communicate these actions to manufacturing, distribution and corporate management.
  • Liaise with domestic and foreign competent authorities, advocating STERIS and its customers needs in promoting fair and impartial hazardous materials transportation regulations.
  • Provide direction, guidance and regulatory support to STERIS business organizations for packaging designed to contain hazardous materials.  Coordinate with STERIS packaging engineers in compliance designs, using DOT and internal records to report tendencies in transportation packaging failures. 
  • Provide hazmat classification, packaging, marking and labeling, and documentation leadership during new product design. 
  • Be familiar with STERIS products, supply chains, and distribution networks, as they relate to hazardous materials regulations in transportation. Use STERIS IT groups to gather logistics data in reporting transportation compliance.
  • Support Lean processes in manufacturing operational environment. 
  • Provide workplace / workforce occupational safety support and project management as directed by the Senior Director, Global HSE.
What You Need to be Successful
  • Bachelor's Degree plus a minimum of 7 years of DOT and hazmat compliance leadership and oversight experience, demonstrating origination and design of compliance programming required. 
  • Current or prior Hazmat certification required. If prior, must be able to acquire and maintain certification.
  • 3 years of training and training design responsibilities experience.
  • Experience managing Health and Safety programs.
  • Domestic and international experience a must.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both inside and outside the organization with both Senior Management Team members and regulatory agencies.  
  • Ability to assign priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment, and effectively handle concurrent assignments.  
  • Ability to liaise with various domestic and foreign government agencies, as required to obtain new and maintain current permits and approvals.
  • Strong PC skills.
