Position Summary
The Electrical Engineering Intern will gain experience in and provide support to the Surgical Solutions Group in executing design tasks and performing testing activities in accordance with predefined system requirements, test plans, data processing, and overall development of electrical engineering products.
This position requires an understanding of the electrical products and physical phenomena being evaluated as part of the developmental campaign. Sufficient mathematical and hands-on testing skills are required in order to appropriately operate equipment safely and accurately, as well as to properly collect and analyze data. The ideal candidate shall possess the technical aptitude necessary to perform the tasks and should be a team player that is detail oriented, communicates well, and follows through.
Duties
- Assist Surgical Solutions Research and Development Group located in Mentor, Ohio with electrical/controls engineering activities including, but not limited to, the following:
- PC Board assembly-level design optimization and troubleshooting of board assemblies comprised of ARM-based processors and various circuit designs (e.g. digital Video signal distribution, Serial communication - RS-232/485, USB, Ethernet, LED control, PWM, miniature servo motor control, I/O interfaces, etc
- Testing with Product/System Interfaces
- Building Simulators
- Building R&D prototypes
- Collecting and Analyzing Data with LabView and other PC-based simulators/test systems
- Assist with User Interface/GUI design
- Assist with system architecture design/block diagrams
Required Experience
- Junior or Senior level courses majoring in Electrical Engineering.
- Coursework in Mathematics and Physics.
- Coursework and Labs in Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
- Experience/coursework with Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and CAD/Schematic Capture (i.e. Altium preferred or Zuken/AutoCAD/Visio/ePLAN etc).
- Previous experience/coursework with electro-mechanical sensors and actuators (i.e. Temperature Devices – TC’s/RTD’s, Pressure Devices – Switches/Transducers, Solenoid Valves, Limit/Level Switches, Pneumatics, Motors, etc) is desirable but not required.
- Previous experience/coursework with microprocessor interfacing / embedded design (i.e. ARM preferred or MCU//DSP/CPLD/FPGA/ASIC, DACs/A2Ds, JTAG preferred or I2C/SPI/UART, TI Code Composer Studio) is desirable but not required.
- Previous experience/coursework with software/firmware programming languages (i.e. C/C++ preferred or misc Object-Oriented, VHDL) is desirable but not required.
