Position Summary

JOIN us in our efforts as a Electrical Technician Intern

The Intern will be working directly with the Surgical Solutions Engineering Services Team supporting new product development under the guidance of our Senior Engineers, Designers and Technicians.  The Intern will provide technician-level support on project initiatives to develop and test new medical devices and R&D prototypes used in the healthcare industry.  The intern will gain experience with processes and tools used in in a regulated healthcare industry to develop and test new products. Summer 2019.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are expected to be performed under direct supervision of engineers, managers or senior designers for new product designs:

  • Assists with building R&D prototypes and electromechanical assemblies
  • Assists with building test fixtures
  • Support R and D prototype testing and data collection using test equipment that measures temperature, electricity, light, flow, pressure, RFI, strain, force, distance, time, weight etc
  • Assists with building cables and harnesses
  • Assists with performing hardware and component research
  • Works as a collaborative team member on engineering projects
  • May interact with vendors, suppliers and consultants to procure R and D samples
  • Maintains facility in a safe, clean and orderly manner at all times in compliance with OSHA VPP standards
  • Other duties as assigned

Education or Experience


  • Minimum Educational Requirement: Completion/Graduation from a High School Electrical/Electronics Technical Program or completion of one year in a technical school with specialized study in electrical/industrial controls/electro mechanics and/or electronics beyond High School.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Capable of using basic electrical test equipment/tools: crimpers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, analyzers, etc
  • Capable of understanding basic electrical safety, including grounding
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment to operate test equipment and measuring tools necessary for the task
  • Familiar with using basic handyman tools
  • Capable of working from prints, sketches, written and verbal instructions                                
  • Capable of reading wiring/electrical schematics and engineering drawings
  • Capable of following instructions and user manuals to set up equipment and data acquisition systems
  • Capable of following test steps in a test procedure document, including recording detailed and accurate test results
  • Ability to use computer applications (i.e. Email, Excel, Word, Documentation Archive Systems)
  • Excellent team player

Physical Demands and Travel

  • Occasionally required to work on a ladder, standing during prototype assembly, or lifting 20 – 50 lbs.
  • May travel to nearby vendor and/or test sites.
