Position Summary

JOIN us in our efforts as a Electrical Engineering Intern

The Intern will be working directly with the Surgical Solutions Controls Group Software Engineering Team supporting new product development and sustaining of existing products, working under the guidance of STERIS Electrical Engineers or Senior Electrical Designers.  The Intern will work on projects supporting the production of operating room related surgical devices used in the healthcare industry and will gain experience with processes associated with working in a regulated healthcare industry. Summer 2019.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are expected to be performed under direct supervision of engineers, managers or senior designers for new product designs:

  • Performs full range of drafting and design duties.
    • Design/Create product labeling and documentation.
    • Design/Create 2D ACAD drawings electrical harnesses and subassemblies.
    • Design/Create 3D models of electrical enclosures and subassemblies.
    • Design/Edit BOMs, keypad schematics, electrical schematics and electrical equipment drawings.
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure that drawings and models are accurate, complete and complies with required specifications and drafting standards.
  • Assists with building prototype assemblies, and associated testing/test fixture.
  • Perform component research.
  • Support R&D prototype testing.
  • May interacts with vendors, suppliers and consultants to procure R&D samples.
  • Release engineering documents and drawings in our drawing vault system.
  • Work as a collaborative team member in engineering projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Education or Experience

Minimum Education Requirement

  • 1 year of college or technical school in electronics engineering technology or equivalent. 2-year technical program degree or certificate preferred.
  • Experience with 2D CAD tool (i.e. AutoCAD Mechanical, EPlan 21).
  • Experience in reading electrical schematics.
  • Experience using basic electrical test equipment/tools: digital meters, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Exposure to simple PCB/PCBA layout, schematics, and manufacturing assembly packages.
  • Experience/coursework with Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and CAD/Schematic Capture (i.e. Altium preferred).
  • Completed coursework in electrical/electronic labs.
  • Completed coursework in Mathematics and Physics. 
  • Previous experience/coursework with electrical components, electro-mechanical sensors and actuators (i.e. Temperature sensor, Switches/Transducers, Motors, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and great with multitasking.
  • Desired:  Experience with keypad, electromechanical subassembly and enclosure design.
  • Desired: Some experience in designing electrical harness assemblies and electrical equipment drawings.
  • Desired: Some exposure to 3D CAD modeling like PRO/E a plus.
