Position Summary

Act as general risk and insurance resource for senior management and the entire organization reporting directly to Vice President and Corporate Treasurer.

The Director, Risk Management develops and implements STERIS’s corporate risk management strategies and leads the risk management team in the administration of the global insurance programs, including placements, negotiations, coverage reviews, and claims management.  This position supports other key internal stakeholders in communicating, identifying, managing, and transferring operational and commercial risks.

The Director is responsible for continuously monitoring and improving existing risk transfer and retention programs to ensure they are meeting objectives and identify where using alternative risk transfer is appropriate. 

This position manages both internal and external staff including external claims management and contract analyst consultants. 

Duties

Builds and leads the global risk management team in maintaining a world class, cost efficient, risk management finance program that provides value to shareholders by reducing variability to STERIS’s cashflows and impact to the balance sheet.  (15%)

Directs all insurance negotiations.  Interfaces with insurance brokers, insurers, and other third-party insurance/risk management- related vendors such as actuaries to secure competitive and favorable insurance terms and contract certainty.  Establishes processes to work with service providers to identify and implement best practices. (15%)

Oversees the management of the following global commercial insurance programs: global property, global casualty, executive risk, cyber security, business travel, surety and other ancillary lines of coverage. (10%)

Supervises global claims activities working with claims management consultants and third-party claims administrators, internal and external legal, and other vendors in effective claims management.  Gather information and provide recommendation of reserves and settlements within authority.  (10%)             

Assesses and considers alternative strategies for risk retention as warranted by changes in the insurance marketplace (relating both to capacity and insurer appetite), considering STERIS’s growth and financial strength. Utilizes quantitative risk analytics and models to provide insight on impacts of trends and  manage long term risk financing decisions (10%)

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or Accounting

Required Experience

  • Twelve years of progressive experience in a role in insurance/risk management (risk management department, commercial insurer, broker and/or similar)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Finance, Accounting, or related field 
  • Strong working knowledge of all major lines of commercial insurance and risk retention and transfer tools including, but not limited to, global property, general liability, executive/management liability, cyber security, professional liability insurance coverages; risk mitigation techniques and practices; captives and alternative risk transfer.
  • Experience leading and managing a risk management staff
  • Experience developing and managing global risk management budget
  • Background leveraging external risk management supplier relationships including brokers, insurers, third party claims administrators, consultants
  • Demonstrated record of successfully partnering with other areas of an organization to drive risk management initiatives

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated strong and effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to interact with, and influence, individuals at all levels of the organization and outside parties. 
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized.  Must be able to prioritize and handle competing demands simultaneously while meeting required deadlines
  • Possess advanced analytical skills and translate sourced data into actionable information
  • Ability to develop, improve, and streamline processes to meet established goals and objectives.  Basic understanding of lean operations a plus.
  • Maintain a collaborative and team-focused approach to conducting work.
  • Skilled in corporate business applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and quick ability to learn RMIS and other reporting applications.
  • Professional designation or license in insurance, risk management or finance preferred such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) a plus.
