Position Summary

The Health Safety & Environment Director is responsible for strategic development, organization and implementation of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) systems, policies, and procedures for multiple STERIS business units within the Global Operations business segment. This includes but is not limited to:

 

  • Effective direction of HSE training programs, compliance assessments.
  • Ensures compliance with STERIS and government regulatory standards and ensures maintenance of all health and safety records and environmental reporting requirements.
  • Communicate strategic direction and company related HSE matters to management. 
  • Provide directions to HSE staff over the full range of their duties and responsibilities, with respect to inspections, audits, report recommendations, changes in legislation and advice obtained from other sources. 

 

The individual will be an integral team member of the business unit’s HSE teams in terms of alignment and implementation of STERIS requirements. The individual will also be an active and participative team member of the various corporate HSE teams and HSE Council.  

What You’ll do as a Director HSE

Health and Safety Management (75%)

  • Provide HSE leadership, support, and guidance to the Global Operation team(s) to achieve HSE compliance and HSE strategic plan alignment and process improvement objectives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of STERIS HSE Policies, Performance Standards, and Guidelines through active participation in the STERIS HSE Council and other related team meetings.
  • Maintain knowledge & awareness of HSE legislation emerging risks, and report changes that may impact the business. Support the development of effective response strategies.
  • Coordinate the business segment’s HSE Legal Register.
  • Manage HSE team members to ensure the effective delivery of the HSE strategy, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Occupational Health medical surveillance programs.
  • Lead the development, implementation and ongoing review of the business segment’s HSE management systems, including policies, procedures, safe working instructions, guidance, information, and HSE updates to address relevant business unit needs.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain HSE management systems that are equivalent and aligned to the ISO 45001 and 14001 voluntary standards.
  • Facilitate and supports the Global Operations in achieving and maintaining OSHA VPP and/or STERIS STAR certification.
  • Identify gaps and potential improvements in HSE management systems, developing and implementing actions to eliminate gaps.
  • Manage the development, completion, and ongoing review of HSE risk assessments, advising on the suitability and application of risk control measures, identify and report on inadequately controlled risks and non-compliance with statutory or internal non-compliance. 
  • Drive continuous improvement and deliver strong results from behavioral based processes

 

Environmental Compliance Management 15%

  • Manage environmental compliance, including conducting reviews, to ensure business units are fully compliant with relevant environmental requirements.
  • Prepare and implement communications based upon existing, new and/or revisions to existing environmental regulations of the country(s) in which the businesses operate.
  • Support business segment Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive disclosures.
  • Coordinate business segment’s HSE Legal Register.

 

Team Leadership (10%)

  • Provides direction to HSE managers and staff to ensure that health, safety/environmental, training, injury management and related policies, procedures and programs are implemented and enforced by providing proactive training, counseling and advice on health and safety issues.
  • Coach and mentor HSE professionals and other key staff to achieve professional growth and improved business performance; participate in the selection and performance management of these individuals.
  • Provide leadership and direction for cross-functional safety committees within business units.
  • Partners with STERIS counterparts in other business units and/or geographic locations to further strategic and tactical goals of STERIS.
  • Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; recruits, trains and evaluates HSE staff.
  • Develops budget recommendations and manages the appropriate expenditure of allocated funding.

The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred in Occupational Health and Safety, healthcare, Engineering/Science, or related field).
  • Minimum of 12 years of progressive HSE management experience with at least 5 years of direct people management. Minimum 15 of years’ experience in lieu of degree. Experience would include partnering with business units to develop HSE strategy, implementing programs, and driving improvements in health and safety key performance indicators.
  • Experience in performing industrial hygiene surveys with little supervision.

 

Preferred:

  • Strongly prefer relevant professional certification.

  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with ability to manage site-level, regional operational and senior management relationships.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a regional / global team.
  • Able to demonstrate effective training development and delivery.
  • Highly effective communication skills; written and oral.
  • Confident with the use of IT systems, e-learning platforms, and software. Understanding of applicable computer systems, such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, databases, and function specific software.

Pay range for this opportunity is $122,187.50 - $158,125.00. This position is eligible for bonus participation.

 

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed.  Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
