Position Summary

The Director, Advanced Materials serves as the transformational leader responsible for determination, development and execution of programs centered around materials and material processing technologies to improve operational metrics- safety, quality, delivery, and cost.  The incumbent will drive the evolution and implementation of short and long-term material and processing strategies across the enterprise while serving as a key liaison between operations, engineering, field technical, and service business leaders. This function will be responsible for standardization of platforms of Advanced Materials and processing technologies introduced across the organization. 

Duties

•    Build a vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for Advanced Materials and processing technologies with an objective of creating scalable and sustainable business solutions that support improving quality, effectiveness, efficiency, safety/ergonomics, design flexibility, competencies, capabilities for products, processes, and people development. 

•    Lead and develop a culture of innovation and operational excellence with a focus on continuous improvement in all areas of Advanced Materials/material processing.

•    Develop standard work process and utilize well defined lean processes to implement technologies and drive change.

•    Assist in the development of Capital Expenditure plans to maximize return on investment.

•    Define actionable items for roadmap and execution in order of priority and potential positive impact to the business while considering available resources, Customer requirements, and other business factors.

•    Maintain key external supply base for advanced materials and material processing.

•    Benchmark the internal landscape and identify prospective internal or external technology partners who would be accountable for deliverables. 

•    Facilitate cross-functional communications across business networks for shared technology needs, practices, and solutions.

•    Collaborate with product, process, and service design teams to ensure considerations are included in the new product development process.
•    Focus on the implementation, establish maintenance, service, and qualification protocols for material technologies.  Ensure thorough and compliant documentation practices are established.
•    Develop and implement methods to monitor and measure effectiveness of implementations; lead corrective actions as applicable.
•    Lead the evaluation and budgeting of new materials and associated technologies, platforms, methods, and systems that align with company priorities such as quality, capacity targets, productivity enhancements, and efficiency.
•    Prepare or assist businesses with preparation of capital requests necessary for implementation. Plan and prepare annual budget.

•    Remain current on technical advancements in material science and processing that could impact the business. 

•    Attract, retain, and develop strong talent. Mentor, coach, develop team members, develop, and retain key technical and leadership skills, foster strong team performance to deliver on the roadmap and meet Customer / business requirements. 

•    Lead the evaluation and budgeting of new materials and associated technologies, platforms, methods, and systems that align with company priorities such as quality, capacity targets, productivity enhancements, and efficiency.
•    Prepare or assist businesses with preparation of capital requests necessary for implementation. Plan and prepare annual budget.

•    Remain current on technical advancements in material science and processing that could impact the business.

Required Experience

•    Bachelors Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics or related engineering/technical field)

•    Minimum of 10 years of experience in process improvement regarding materials development in an operational environment, including at least 5 years in a leadership role managing a technical project. 
•    Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of Advanced Technology applications including the use of advanced materials and 3D printing.

•     5+ years project management and reporting experience.

•    Demonstrated positive impact to the business that translated to clear, bottom line results by implementing step-function changes.

•    Experience with and demonstrated skills in analyzing business needs, determining appropriate solutions and/or opportunities, developing lean implementation strategies, and deploying them. 

•    Successful experience with effectiveness across multi-functional/multi-organizational areas. 
 

Preferred Experience

  • Masters Degree, MBA or technical

•    Experience working in a regulated environment, medical device experience, a plus.

•    3+ years of material selection and qualification.

•    3D printing experience, exposure to 3D printing methods, materials and processing for the manufacturing environment.

•    Experience working in a lean company with first-hand knowledge of their practices and policies regarding automation utilized in their operations.
