Position Summary

This Software Engineering Co-op experience will assist in designing software for security and support the Infection Prevention Technologies (IPT) Software Engineering Team in maintaining security for new medical devices and existing products, working under the guidance of STERIS Software engineers.  This position will work on analyzing and upgrading security of connected devices used in healthcare and life sciences industries, and will gain experience with cybersecurity process associated with the healthcare industry. 

This position will be based in Mentor, OH, starting Fall 2022 through the Spring 2023 Semester. 

What You Will Do

  • Work with product development teams in creation of product cybersecurity threat model based upon software system design
  • Develop understanding of embedded Linux development environment and build system.
  • Participate in creation of Cybersecurity plans per STERIS work instructions
  • Work with product development teams in creation of cybersecurity vulnerability assessments to calculate CVSS scores and specify risk controls
  • Learn about state of the art cybersecurity practices and latest standards and verification techniques
  • Performs product security testing and vulnerability scans on STERIS device software
  • Help with Patching of fielded product software and perform verification of patched software (static/dynamic analysis, regression testing, vulnerability scans, etc.)
  • Evaluate penetration and fuzz testing tools for new products containing software
  • Participates in design and code reviews and/or inspections to ensure proper implementation of security control measures defensive coding practices.
  • Work as a collaborative team member in engineering projects

What You Need To Be Successful

  • Minimum Educational Requirement: Successful completion of Sophomore level coursework or above by May 2022
  • Coursework appropriate for academic standing (minimum of a 3.5 GPA desired)
  • Languages:  Coursework or professional experience with one or more of Python, C, C++, C#, Java
  • Basic software design knowledge
  • Exposure to operating systems and communication protocols
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Some knowledge of secure or defensive programming is desirable
  • Knowledge of working with Unix based OS is desirable
