Position Summary

The Radiation Safety Specialist is responsible for assisting with and supporting the Radiation Protection Program implementation for assigned North American Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) facilities. You will audit facilities, provide documentation and reporting, and have project oversight. You will work to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standard requirements.  This is an ideal position for an individual that loves to travel and is excited about a career path that few people have.  This position can be located in Libertyville, IL, Chester, NY or Ontario, CA.

Duties

•    Assists in the implementation of policies and procedures in the Radiation Safety Program to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain personal exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
•    Coordinates with Corporate Radiation Safety Officer and Facility Radiation Safety Officers to ensure that Radiation Safety Program policies and procedures are effective by providing training and guidance on related issues.
•    Conducts annual Radiation Safety Program audits in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations and prepares and submits written reports.
•    Assists in effective follow-up for potential hazards or cited violations by ensuring that corrective actions are implemented in accordance with organizational or regulatory standards.
•    Assists in verification that the radiation Safety Program policies and procedures are adhered to by investigating incidents and auditing work practices.
•    Maintains radiation safety related equipment inventory.
•    Develops professional skills, knowledge and abilities by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and participating in professional societies related to radiation and radiation safety.
•    Under direct guidance, employs the hierarchy of controls to control workplace radiation related hazards. This includes performing hazard assessments, selecting equipment, providing training and monitoring to determine the effectiveness of controls.
•    Assists Facility Radiation Safety Officers with implementation of programs.
•    Communicates in an effective manner by using accepted business practices in a courteous and professional manner and providing timely and accurate responses and service-oriented offers of assistance.
•    Protects company confidential information by properly storing, retrieving and disseminating such information only to those authorized.
•    Exhibits a commitment to the AST shared values of Customer Satisfaction and Continuous Improvement through ensuring defect-free workmanship, assisting others to meet the Customer’s needs, searching for efficient and effective ways to reduce waste, being active and accountable for Customer satisfaction, and satisfying the Customer’s needs with a sense of urgency.
•    Contributes in a team effort by performing according to the guidelines outlined in the STERIS Code of Business Conduct, the GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management and performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Safety or Physics.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% to assigned facilities that includes but is not limited to NY, OH, IL, CA.
  • Minimum one to three years experience working in regulated industry 
  • Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision. Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate. Spanish is a plus.
  • With training, ability to understand, interpret and implement radiation safety policies and procedures.  Knowledge of required regulations, standards and equipment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to perform onsite audits.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated through prior experience.
  • Strong organizing, analyzing and Level 4 math skills (practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, measurements and basic algebra) to determine organizational Customer and regulatory problems and formulate corrective action plans; attention to detail.
