Position Summary:

The Laboratory Manager II is responsible for business growth planning and actively contributing to overall laboratory strategy, in addition to managing Laboratory staff and operations to ensure customer service, cost control, quality and regulatory compliance, efficient sample processing, and safety protocol expectations are met.  The Laboratory Manager may serve as a technical expert, providing recommendations and other support to internal and external customers and the Laboratory Staff. This includes managing customer communications, scheduling, testing, analysis, trending of timeliness, and accuracy of processing. 

What you will do with us:

1.    Manages Laboratory operations by ensuring regulatory and quality system compliance for all areas within the Laboratory, as well as the efficient and accurate processing of testing samples. 
2.    Provides technical expertise and support to internal/external customers, Laboratory Supervisors, and customer service team. 
3.    Recommends, plans, oversees and drives improvements to existing operations through various work initiatives.
4.    Assesses workforce and operational flow patterns in the Laboratory, ensuring proper resource allocation based on trend analyses. 
      a.    Implements methods to ensure efficient and effective use of equipment and facility space. 
5.    Works with the sales team to make recommendations on pricing based on cost awareness. 
6.    Recommends, plans, oversees and monitors financial performance of the laboratory (cost reduction, etc.).
7.    Contributes to a team effort by performing in accordance to all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management and performs other duties as assigned. 

8.   Manages Laboratory staff, including the direct supervision Laboratory Supervisors, scientists and/or analysts and indirect supervision of all Laboratory staff. 
      a.    Participates in the hiring, firing and performance management of Laboratory staff. 
      b.    Provides formal and informal feedback. 
      c.    Oversees the planning, scheduling and monitoring of Laboratory operations 
      d.    Recommends, plans, implements and coordinates training, leadership development, mentoring, and career growth for Laboratory staff. 
 

Education, Experience & Skillset

  • Bachelor's Degree - Technical Field
  • Minimum 10 years in a Laboratory or medical device industry
  • Minimum 7 years in a leadership role. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of 21CFR 820, ISO 13485, ISO/EIC 17025 standards.
  • Skill in managing Laboratory operations and staff.
  • Skill in thinking strategically at a management level.
  •  Skill in leading, mentoring and developing staff. 
  • Skill in complex decision-making with short-term and long-term implications. 
  • Skill in identifying and driving continuous improvement initiatives.  
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements or work environment.
  • Ability to work under control in pressure situations and adapt rapidly to change.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence.
