Position Summary

The primary focus of the Microbiology laboratory is to provide a full service offering to support medical device manufacturers bringing sterile product to market. Validation and routine testing services include bioburden, sterility, method suitability, LAL endotoxin, and aging studies. Additional routine activities include media prep, growth promotion, environmental monitoring, microbial characterizations, maintenance and restocking of laboratory consumables, equipment calibration, data trending and accurate interpretation, sample preparation for gamma irradiation and/or microbiological testing, maintenance of general laboratory and laboratory equipment cleanliness, contamination control within a cleanroom environment, and health and safety awareness.



  1. Executes assigned microbiological testing in accordance with regulated laboratory testing techniques
  2. Performs support functions such as steam sterilization of Laboratory supplies and reusable equipment
  3. Monitors, accurately records, and interprets data for equipment, testing, and environmental conditions and notifies Lab Manager of any apparent or potential issues impacting testing results and/or compliance with procedures and/or regulations 
  4. Performs media preparation and growth promotion
  5. Carries out cleaning of glassware and proper disposal of used testing items and test-related waste
  6. Accurately completes and maintains lab required documentation
  7. Maintains laboratory inventory
  8. Operates steam sterilizer for terminal sterilization of laboratory media, reagents, glassware and utensils for use in microbiological assays
  9. Generates labels for media reagents and cleaning supplies
  10. Executes assigned Laboratory tests as requested such as: Bioburden, LAL, Aging Studies, and Sterility testing in compliance with regulations and procedures, utilizing aseptic technique
  11. Maintains compliance with company policies, regulatory standards and requirements
  12. Maintains a high level of safety awareness and compliance to safety standards and requirements.
  13. Exhibits a commitment to the AST shared values of Customer Satisfaction and Continuous Improvement through ensuring defect-free workmanship, assisting others to meet the Customer’s needs, searching for efficient and effective ways to reduce waste, being active and accountable for Customer satisfaction, and satisfying the Customer’s needs with a sense of urgency.
  14. Contributes in a team effort by performing according to the guidelines outlined in the STERIS Code of Business Conduct, the GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher level management and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  1. Must be a self-starter that demonstrates analytical thinking, trouble shooting, and problem solving independently and within group settings
  2. Must be an excellent communicator both verbally and written
  3. Must be detail oriented
  4. Requires ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate in English.
  5. Ability to perform technical document preparation
  6. Ability to work under control in pressure situations and adapt rapidly to change
  7. Ability to read and interpret rules, schedules, procedures and instructions.
  8. Basic math skills, including fractions and decimals
  9. Ability to work well with others
  10. Ability to work well independently
