Position Summary

Zero Hours Technician – Instrument Management Services, required to supply their services on an irregular/flexible basis.  Responsible for providing a high-quality service for the cleaning, inspection, assembly and packing of sterile equipment for hospital and community settings.

This role will involve working in a fast-paced environment, where quality and precision is vital.  Full training and support is provided in a programme to help staff to reach their full potential, learning a wide range of hospital instruments and working in different functional areas of the sterilisation process.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • 1.    To ensure the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, instruments and equipment) by the process of cleaning, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.

    2.    To rigorously check, wash, lay-up and pack sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.

    3.    To safely operate and monitor machines and equipment (driers, washers, sterilisers) effectively.

    4.    To ensure that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system.

    5.    To ensure that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets.

    6.    The post requires manual dexterity and the ability to use complex equipment for example, this role involves disassembly, inspection, decontamination, packaging and sterilisation of surgical instrumentation to predetermined standards.  The decontamination and sterilisation processes are carried out using complex processing units.

    7.    To undertake daily testing of Autoclaves and washers/disinfectors and related equipment.

    8.    Participate in daily housekeeping and equipment preparation checks in accordance with Trust and National Standards.

    9.    To organise own daily work within allocated areas, working unsupervised in the absence of a supervisor/team leader.

    10. The ability to recognise all surgical instruments and identify trays used within the trust.

    11. Assembling instruments and checking for safety and correct function in accordance with departmental procedures, specifications and best practice.

    12. To monitor and operate within required health and safety guidelines.

    13. To participate in staff development and training initiatives.

    14. To actively participate in the Synergy Health Performance Management System.

    15. To undertake any other duties or tasks as reasonably required.

The jobholder will comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other supplementary legislation and is required to take reasonable care to avoid injury during the course of work and co-operate with the Trust’s and Company’s Health and Safety policy and statutory regulations. 

To use in a proper safe manner the equipment and facilities provided.

To refrain from wilful misuse of, or interference with, anything provided in the interest of health and safety and any action, which might endanger yourself and others.

To report as soon as practical accidents, hazards and untoward incidents and to ensure that accident forms are completed.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Physical Effort

 

  • To adhere to the Company Manual Handling policy and procedure in executing the safe transfer of instrumentation and sundry items around the Trust.  This will require moving heavy weights manually and using trolleys on a regular basis.

 

Mental Effort                                      

                  

  • To be able to maintain concentration where the work pattern is predictable for example, maintaining high standards of accuracy when checking the contents of instrument sets.

 

Emotional Effort

 

  • Exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances is rare.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • The post entails frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions in that direct exposure to body fluids is implicit in the Sterile Services Technician role.  Similarly implicit is the handling of chemical cleansing agents (irritant) with the protective equipment supplied and the risk of spillage that these procedures incur.
