Position Summary

Works on optical engineering projects and provides support to the optical engineering department.  Collaborates in simulation and designs of optical systems in Optical Studio (ZEMAX) software package. Under the direction of Optical Engineers, designs mechanical systems on SolidWorks to support optical simulations. 


  1. Support optical projects from concept to procurement and verification stage for new product development and/or repair capability development.
  2. Collaborates with Optical Engineers in the creation, reviews, and approvals of medium complexity optical designs and changes.  
  3. Performs measurements and inspections of incoming optical components to ensure parts are compliant with their associated specifications.
  4. Participates in the creation of work instructions (WI) for optical engineering functions and rework processes.
  5. Works with Optical Engineering Team in the securing of resources to accomplish optical engineering projects within acceptable time frames. (metrology, OEM devices, outsourced services).  
  6. Participates in the set-up, maintenance and works in lab on optical component characterization.

  1. Participates in the calibration of optical metrology equipment and ensures that it functions properly.
  2. Participates in the performance of measurements of optical components and optical systems.  
  3. Supports repair team with functional drawings for optical components and systems.
  4. Documents measuring results; make drawings for optical components and systems. Determines tolerances and quality criteria.
  5. Collaborates in the modeling of Optical Systems with optical simulation software Optical Studio (ZEMAX) to check function and performance parameters of designed systems.
  6. Models mechanical parts/assemblies related to optical designs when they interrelate.
  7. Conducts technical presentations to medical professionals and IMS employees.
  8. Operates effectively in a team setting.
  9. Demonstrates and maintains a professional image of the engineering department both internally and to external customers.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering General

Required Experience

General Engineering Knowledge that could include some of the following knowledge principles:

  • General theory of light emission, propagation and absorption, laws of geometrical and physical optics.
  • Theoretical function and practical application of optical components, optical systems. (objectives, relays, oculars etc.)
  • Principles and procedures of documentation and record keeping of R&D results.
  • Understanding of design control methods, including verification/validation testing techniques.

Preferred Experience

  1. Optical design experience required and familiarity with medical device industry.  
  2. Project management experience.  
  3. Expertise in optical simulation software (ZEMAX).
  4. Working knowledge of SolidWorks (or equivalent).  
  5. Three years’ experience in the following preferred:
    1. Optical design experience required.  
    2. Function and operation of optical metrology equipment.
    3. Translating voice of customer input into specific design requirements.


  1. Ability to understand and explain theory of geometric and physical optics.  
  2. Knowledge and experience in Windows, MS Office, mathematical and optical design software.
