Position Summary

Responsible for managing and coordinating the resources of the Engineering Department, while helping to define the vision and strategy for the Mechanical Engineering Department in alignment with the organization’s goals.


Manages engineering projects and provides leadership to the mechanical engineering department.  Aligns the mechanical engineering department activities and deliverables with current market demands and overall organizational business goals.  Provides comprehensive support for all STERIS-IMS departments with regards to the mechanical, material and electro-mechanical issues.  Simulates and designs mechanical, material and electro-mechanical designs with modern related software.  Trains and directs the mechanical engineering team in using lab equipment, software and lead research activities. Represents STERIS-IMS’ technical excellence on engineering and scientific levels at major scientific conferences, research institutes and cooperating companies.  Mentors and tutors peers, management and customers about all mechanical, material and electro-mechanical and related issues.  Interacts with customers, management, sales, and operation supervisors to ensure support of all mechanical, material and electro-mechanical aspects.


  • Manages the daily activities of engineering operations including, Operations Support Engineering, Test and Validation Engineering, and customer interactions.
  • Communicates proactively with Executive Management and other key leaders to identify and recommends opportunities to enable efficiencies and generate opportunities for business growth.
  • Manages project priorities and coordinates the projects from development through implementation, including staffing requirements, work plans, deadlines, completeness, and adherence to established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Manages resources by providing appropriate direction and feedback, conducts annual reviews, and builds training and career development plans.
  • Ensures that the department is properly staffed with skill-sets required to enhance existing systems, delivers new functionality, and provides support as required by the organization, including on-going staff and contractors.

  • Secures, develops, and promotes the intellectual property of the Engineering department and the organization as a whole.
  • Provides support and training of technical information and engineering abilities to the sales and marketing staff as related to customer interactions (CMS, site visits, STERIS-IMS University, etc.)
  • Directs, reviews, and approves product designs and changes.
  • Prepares technical papers, budgets, and department progress reports. Creates S.O.P.’s for engineering functions and rework processes.
  • Provides input for departmental budget and works to manage operational and capital expenses in order to meet budget.
  • Improves the development processes, tools, and methodologies in the department.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering General

Required Experience

  • 5 years in managing an engineering team minimum. 
  • 5+ years of experience in new product development. 

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years experience with hands-on and machine shop strongly preferred. 
  • 10+ experience in managing an engineering team preferred. 


  • Familiarity with parametric modeling (SolidWorks). 
  • Extensive experience in mechanical design and medical device industry required. 
  • Project management experience required.
