Position Summary

Provides on-site support for the reprocessing of surgical instruments and trays to contracted facilities in compliance with the Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards and facilities goals and policies. Position level will be determined by previous job related experience, performance and certification requirements. 

Duties

  • Operates all mechanical machinery; cart washers, instrument washers, steam sterilizers, low temp sterilizers, ultrasonic and drying cabinets, within sterile processing. 
  • Uses established policies and procedures to complete work assignments 
  • Learns and trains in all areas of sterile processing including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes within all set professional standards and regulations. 
  • Able to perform assembly on basic instrument trays. 
  • Refers all decisions beyond personal scope of responsibilities to IMS leadership. 
  • Reports broken instrumentation. 
  • Supports and adheres to IMS policies and procedures. 
  • Participates in in-services and educational offerings provided by IMS in the facility.

Education Degree

  • High School Diploma or GED

Required Experience

  •  0-1 years SPD experience

Computer Skills                    

  • Basic computer skills and aptitude. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations  

  • Ability to obtain certification in sterile processing/central sterile via CBSPD or IAHCSMM within 12 months of hire strongly preferred. 

Other Skills and Abilities                    

  • Medical instrument knowledge.  Knowledge of sterilization and processing equipment.   

Other Qualifications                    

  • Ability to work daily in a fast-paced, high pressure Healthcare Service environment.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and reach with hands and arms. JOB PURPOSE                

< >To provide a high quality service for the cleaning inspection, assembly and packing of sterile equipment for hospital and community settings.To take a flexible approach to work within the sterile services department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

< >To ensure the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, instruments and equipment) by the process of cleaning, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.To rigorously check, wash, lay-up and pack sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.To safely operate and monitor machines and equipment (driers, washers, sterilisers) effectively.To ensure that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system.To ensure that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets.The post requires manual dexterity and the ability to use complex equipment for example, this role involves disassembly, inspection, decontamination, packaging and sterilisation of surgical instrumentation to predetermined standards.  The decontamination and sterilisation processes are carried out using complex processing units.To undertake daily testing of Autoclaves and washers/disinfectors and related equipment.Participate in daily housekeeping and equipment preparation checks in accordance with Trust and National Standards.To organise own daily work within allocated areas, working unsupervised in the absence of a supervisor/team leader.The ability to recognise all surgical instruments and identify trays used within the trust.Assembling instruments and checking for safety and correct function in accordance with departmental procedures, specifications and best practice.To monitor and operate within required health and safety guidelines.To participate in staff development and training initiatives.To actively participate in the Synergy Health Performance Management System.To undertake any other duties or tasks as reasonably required.AND SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT

Working Conditions

< >The post entails frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions in that direct exposure to body fluids is implicit in the Sterile Services Technician role.  Similarly implicit is the handling of chemical cleansing agents (irritant) with the protective equipment supplied and the risk of spillage that these procedures incur.
