Position Summary

This HSE Specialist role is located at the Dental division headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. This individual will support the HSE Manager in the Health, Safety & Environmental department for the Dental Division.  Primary responsibilities will be for multiple locations in the Chicago area. Under the guidance of the Manager of Health Safety, and Environment (HSE) and other team members, this role will support development and implementation of the Health, Safety and Environment management systems for the STERIS DENTAL Division manufacturing operations, and other locations as required.  The individual will be an integral team member of the Divisional and Corporate HSE teams and STERIS business groups, to implement “best practices” for STERIS employees. The path forward consistently requires the attainment and sustainment of  the STERIS World Class Safety Excellence for all employees.


Provide manufacturing operations support to the HSE Manager and Divisional Management.  This includes, but is not limited to;

Health, Safety and Environmental Support (100%)

  • Assist and monitor the regional COVID-19 countermeasures and Safe Work Environment work practices.
  • Facilitate the creation, continuous development, delivery, assessment of learning outcomes and performance reporting of engaging, innovative HSE training and learning.
  • Support the development, implementation and ongoing review of documented HSE management systems, including policies, procedures, safe working instructions, guidance, information and HSE updates to address relevant business unit needs.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintenance of HSE Management Systems that are equivalent and aligned to the ISO 45001 and 14001 voluntary standards.
  • Align HuFriedy and Crosstex HSE procedures with STERIS HSE Performance Standards, Procedures, Guidelines, etc.

  • Identify gaps and potential improvements in HSE management systems, developing and implementing actions to eliminate gaps.
  • Support response related to HSE incidents - injury reporting & investigation for relevant business units, ensuring that all injuries, incidents and near misses are reported and investigated in accordance with STERIS policy.
  • Support collection & analysis of Dental HSE performance data HSE metrics.
  • Work closely with the regional / global HSE and STERIS training teams to develop and deliver a comprehensive, interactive blended HSE learning approach, including e-learning, coaching, toolbox talks, bite-size training, workbooks, workshops and classroom-based learning.
  • Support Transitional Work-duty and Workers Compensation claim management.
  • Participate in effective HSE communication using monthly safety calls, internal intranet, newsletters, internal publications and other engagement initiatives to improve employee awareness, competency and safety performance.
  • Use Lean methodology to drive improvements in HSE programs.
  • Engineer solutions to occupational exposures. Drive continuous improvement and deliver strong results from behavioral based processes
  • Train and educate the facility safety committees.
  • Ensure environmental, chemical, and machinery related compliance to OSHA, EPA, and local regulations.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

  • Must have at least 4 years experience administering EPA, health and safety strategies and programs in a related industry, including, but not limited to, world class injury avoidance, ergonomic expertise, material handling, machine guarding, Lock Out Tag Out, and employee on-boarding training.
  • Must have experience in prioritizing and implementing changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have experience in giving effective oral presentation to a wide range of audiences ranging from hourly employees to senior corporate executives and government agents.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher).


Preferred Experience

  • Lean manufacturing knowledge and experience preferred.


  • Communication – ability to communicate across functions, professional levels and backgrounds both orally and written
  • Reasoning – must be able to evaluate complex employee relations issues and develop rational basis for decision-making that balances employee and company interests.
  • Computer Skills – knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint.
  • Working knowledge of HSE.
