Position Summary

The Senior Manager, DET Laboratory manages DET laboratory operations and personnel including Customer communications, scheduling, testing, analysis, trending of timeliness and accuracy of processing to ensure Customer satisfaction and compliance. Serves as subject matter expert for key Customer accounts, providing technical information.

Required Experience

  • Ten or more years relevant experience within the Lab, pharma, or medical device industry preferred.  Bachelor's Degree required.  Master's Degree preferred. Such experience should include bench (Chemistry or Microbiology) lab supervision, cleaning or disinfectant validation, process engineering and/or technical support. Minimum 5 years experience in a supervisory position.
  • Knowledge and understanding of 21CFR 820, ISO 13485, ISO/EIC 17025 standards.
  • Must understand standard aseptic techniques and common laboratory equipment use.
  • Strong Customer and service orientation with ability to effectively utilize resources for technical information.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations and technical personnel.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence.
  • High level of organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated high level decision-making capabilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Industry recognition as subject matter expert in area(s) of specialization, developed through reading current published literature, attending and presenting at scientific meetings and seminars, and in collaboration with technical experts internal to STERIS as well as outside the organization. 
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements. 
  • Strong technical, planning, interpersonal and written/oral communications skills.   
  • Ability to interact with other groups such as Quality, Product Development, Manufacturing, Regulatory, and Marketing to achieve cross-functional mutual objectives. 
  • Strong team orientation, with project management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with Excel, Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills and oral presentation skills. 
  • Demonstrates solid organizational skills, good judgment and ability to think analytically and drive complex problems to resolution.


  • Manages projects and technical support to provide technical information and expertise for a product line or family integrating multiple areas of specialization (e.g., chemistry, application validation, etc.) or application (e.g., solid dose, API, medical devices) to key Customer accounts.  
  • Increases sales force effectiveness by administering local Customer and professional education programs and working with Customers and sales representatives on product applications, appropriate product usage, and providing background information and analytical support.
  • Responsible for analysis, and problem resolutions relating to technical questions from customers and/or sales representative.  Problem resolution often involves participating in multi-disciplinary groups. 
  • Stay current on activities of US and International agencies governing the manufacture of   drugs, devices, cosmetics, and disinfectants/sterilant.  Communicates new relevant information to Marketing, Sales and customers. 
  • Responsible for maintaining credibility of department through development and execution of STERIS and industry affiliated seminars, preparation and publication of technical papers and articles and participation in professional organizations as a member or a presenter. 
  • Manages DET Laboratory processes to ensure quality and efficient sample processing. 20% - 30%
  • Manages and mentors staff in planning, scheduling and monitoring of Laboratory operations. 20% - 25% 
  • Ensures evaluation of improvements to existing procedures. 5%
