Position Summary

Lead a team of software developers in the design and implementation of connectivity solutions for STERIS Healthcare capital products including sterilizers, washers, and automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs).  Provide feedback, coaching, and performance assessments to direct reports.  Assign engineers to tasks across multiple projects and guide execution.  Coordinate with project managers and software test team in creating schedules for device and application releases and associated documentation.  Continuously assess team’s performance and refine processes and development tools to improve output quality and team efficiency to better meet company goals. 

Duties

  1. Assigns team members in the specification, design, implementation, and verification of software applications and firmware according to corporate policies and business operating procedures
  2. Works with other software team members and engineering managers to coordinate team’s activities and resolve engineering and project issues.
  3. Reviews output of direct reports including specifications, designs, code, and other deliverables, providing guidance and feedback.
  4. Mentors team to propagate good design principles and development practices.
  5. Investigates new software technologies and tools which may increase team’s performance.
  6. Creates and maintains software work instructions which comply with regulatory guidelines and corporate polices.
  7. Collaborates with groups outside of direct responsibilities including other engineering groups, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc. for project planning, analysis of product requirements, and to outline proposed solutions.
  8. Sets objectives for direct reports, assessing performance throughout the year, and providing an annual performance review.
  9. Recruits for open positions on team.  Contracts with outside software consultants as needed.
  10. Guides team in the design of safe, secure, and robust control systems and software applications.
  11. Manages both onsite and offshore resources.

Required Experience

  • Requires 7+ years of related software design and development experience.
  • Bachelor in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering.   (A degree in another Engineering discipline or in Science may be acceptable with proven software education and/or training and demonstrated software experience.)
  • Five or more years of experience in the design and development of software applications and firmware systems
  • Experience working in medical device industry or other regulated industry is highly desirable which require formalized software development processes and software risk management.
  • At least 3 years experience in leading and coaching software engineers.
  • Demonstrated leader and/or technical expert within a software development organization.
  • Exceptional team player with leadership responsibilities.
  • Capable of solving complex engineering problems through analysis of requirements and system data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.  Abilty to clearly articulate goals, status, and actions.
  • Able to lead the development of web and cloud applications using React, nodejs, and .NET.
  • Knowledgeable in the design and scaling of cloud applications in Azure or AWS
  • Practical experience in object-oriented analysis and programming using Java, C#, and C++
  • Experience in using IOT Publish/Subscribe protocols such as MQTT
  • Practical experience in database design, particularly using MongoDB and SQL
  • Solid understanding of the development lifecycle activities and deliverables for software systems.
  • Knowledge of Internet ot Things (IoT) and associated solutions is desired, e.g., remote monitoring solutions is desired.
  • Experience performing software requirement analysis and definition.    Proven skills in working with stakeholders to refine product requirements to be realized in software.
  • Able to travel up to 10% (including international)
